1. Resurrection: (Rise again)

• 1 Thessalonians 5:23 tells that all human beings have a body, soul and spirit
o When we put our trust in the Lord and are born-again, we have a new Spirit. The Holy Spirit
is the guarantee of our redemption.
o Our Body and Soul await redemption (When our soulish(natural) bodies will get transformed
into a spiritual body). Resurrection refers to the raising again of the body.
o [Rom 8:23 KJV] 23 And not only [they], but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the
Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, [to wit], the
redemption of our body.
o In the interim we pursue sanctification. He who has this hope (of the Lord’s return) will
purify himself (I Jn 3:3) even as He is pure

• Apart from Enoch and Elijah, all human beings died in their bodily form – including those who were
raised from the dead.
o 1 King 17:17-24 (Widow of Zarephath’s son), 2 Kings 4:18-37 - Shunamite Woman’s son,
Israelite man whose body touched the bones of Elisha 2 Kings 13:20–21
o Luke 7:11–17 Widow of Nain’s son , Luke 8:49–56 Jairus’ 12-year-old daughter, John 11:1-
44 Lazarus
• Moses’ case is unclear
o He died, but as stated in Jude, the dominion over his body was not given to Satan - Jude 1:9,
KJV: "Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the
body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke
thee."
o Moses was seen with Elijah telling Jesus what must take place in Jerusalem (leading to His
crucifixion) – (Mount of transfiguration) - [Lk 9:28-36] About eight days after Jesus said this,
he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was
praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of
lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendour, talking with Jesus.
31 They spoke about his departure,[a] which he was about to bring to fulfilment at
Jerusalem.

2. Where do the dead go?

• Before the cross - Sheol

o Bodies buried. Souls would descend into or under the earth or go below.
o Righteous – Luke 16:19-28, Abraham’s bosom (souls held captive here, but the righteous
were not tormented as they died in hope, waiting for the redemptive promise of God).
Satan had power on Earth due to Adam’s sin (lost dominion).
o Unrighteous – Hades – Place of torment

• What happened after the Lord’s death on the cross?

o Jesus came as a man – Body, Soul, Spirit
o Spirit
▪ [Luk 23:46 KJV] 46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into
thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
▪ Spirit -> Into the Father’s hands.
o Soul (& Body) – Jesus descended below
▪ [Mat 12:40 KJV] 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly;
so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
o [Act 2:27 KJV & Ps 16:10 KJV] 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt
thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. (His body did not see corruption. He never
sinned)
o [1Pe 3:19 KJV] 19 By which also he went and preached (Greek- Herald/Proclaimed) unto the
spirits in prison; Jesus proclaimed that the dominion of Satan is over, he took back authority
that Adam had lost.
o [1Pe 4:6 KJV] 6 For this cause was the gospel preached (glad tidings) also to them that are
dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in
the spirit. This could be for the prisoners in Abraham’s bosom? Rev 1:18 – Jesus fulfilled the
law and now holds the key to death and hades.
3. After the cross (First Resurrection)
o First Resurrection could be in phases – like the Harvest in feasts (first fruits,…)
o Matthew 27:50-54 Lord’s crucifixion – Earthquake rent the curtain, split (rent) open rocks.
After the Lord’s resurrection, saints buried in the holy city rose (in their bodies) and
appeared to many. However – these seem to be resurrected bodies (spiritual bodies). They
did not die again (?). No scripture about where they went finally. Assumption – they went to
paradise with the Lord. They had resurrection bodies
o First resurrection could be in phases (like harvest) or an event ?
▪ First fruits
• The Lord Jesus Christ
o [1 Co 15:20] But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first
fruits of those who have fallen asleep.
• Holy saints in Jerusalem (Matthew 27:50-54)
• Everyone saint in Abraham’s bosom
o [Psa 68:18 KJV] 18 Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity
captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, [for] the rebellious also,
that the LORD God might dwell [among them].
o [Eph 4:8 KJV] 8 Wherefore he saith, when he ascended up on high, he
led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
▪ After the cross – bodies are in the grave, but the Spirit goes to be with Christ
• Stephen
o [Act 7:56, 59 KJV] 56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and
the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. ... 59 And they
stoned Stephen, calling upon [God], and saying, Lord Jesus, receive
my spirit.
• Paul
o [2Co 5:8 KJV] 8 We are confident, [I say], and willing rather to be
absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
• Believers covered by the Blood of Jesus – go to the Lord’s presence
immediately. But everyone waits for the redemption of their bodies
• The Two Witnesses are killed and resurrected [Rev 11:11-12] But after the
three and a half days the breath of life from God entered them, and they
stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. Then they heard a
loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they went up
to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on.
• When the Lord’s comes back, believers in Christ who have fallen asleep, will
precede the “catching-up” (Parousia) of the saints
o [1 Th 4:14] For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we
believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep
in him.
o [1 Th 4:16] For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a
loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet
call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. (Note the order)
o As with the feasts – if we count the harvest season from the first fruits
followed by other milestones, Rev 20:4-7 declares the conclusion of
the season or phase of First Resurrection
▪ [Rev 20:4-7] I saw thrones on which were seated those who
had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those
who had been beheaded because of their testimony about
Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not
worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its
mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and
reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 (The rest of the dead
did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This
is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy are those who
share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power
over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and
will reign with him for a thousand years.
o [1 Th 4:17] After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught
up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And
so we will be with the Lord forever. The ones in Christ – who are still
alive when the Lord returns will be changed in the twinkling of any
eye and get resurrected bodies without seeing death. (This is after the
dead in Christ are raised up – in the right order).
o [1 Co 15:50-53] I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and
blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable
inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all
sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an
eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be
raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable
must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with
immortality.

4. The second resurrection – End of Millennial Kingdom – Great White Throne

- Judgement
o [Rev 20:11-15]
o Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens
fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and
small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened,
which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as
recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades
gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they
had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the
second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown
into the lake of fire.
