INTRODUCTION

These translations and transcriptions, of which the Tenjin Shinyō Ryū Ten No Maki document is a part of, were
produced in the interests of the American Federation of Jujutsu. Any party or person is free to avail themselves of a
copy of this text or any other found therein. It would be appreciated if you would acknowledge the AFJ in doing so.

Technical Information:

The original document is 20th to 21st Century copy of 19th Century scroll and there is a copy of the original scroll we
used to produce this with included in this PDF text. The document is known and confirmed to be a key document of
[one of the forms of] the old Tenjin Shinyō Ryū, probably a representative of a divergent branch of the Tenjin Shinyō
Ryū, being that it appears to be an abridgment. If one examines this scroll then one sees that it is missing some of the
central entries known of the scroll, but it's fully legitimate a scroll anyways. This kind of an abridgment would be
common for small divergent branches and schools out of them. Which sub-branch is not quite certain? In either event
the scroll would usually have been slightly larger with a few small statements included in what is missing from this
example.

There are those whom would contend by means of brute strength, and if people refuse [to respond
with] the [necessary] power, what advantage is there then? Beyond the military methods (heihō) and
the military arts (heijutsu), it is [considered] a matter of rote recourse to respond with henka variations
according to the changes of the enemy. In other words, when one sees the circumstances of the River-
side Willow tree waving in the wind, it can be much the same as if one had gained the Greater wisdom
of the enlightenment of the virtues of Yawara ( "harmony", "Japan(-ese)", "jujutsu") [(ALT TRANS: “... the virtues of the teachings of

comes from the orchards of the virtues of Yawara ( "harmony", "Japan(-ese)", "jujutsu") [(ALT TRANS: “... the orchards of [the teachings

Manpō Ki'itsu
10,000 Methods Converging As One

Regarding the 10,000 methods (manpō), these occur with considerable understanding. The [10,000]
surely conclude in becoming one, and [?the unity?] of that one surely concludes as one itself when
troubles have taken a-hold of us. This leads to a sense of selfless resignation, that having become the
reality of one's person. One's body then becomes subject to the rules of the principle of the character
MANJI [means "things converging and in motion"]. And uncertainty has becomes one's sworn enemy,
day and night constantly wherever it is that one meets [this condition]. That all of these adversarial
things are indeed splendid is a crucial point, since coincidentally they require a person to make use of
entreatment. A person must use the various aspects [of the circumstance.]

SUMMARY

The most original version of the document would have been dated at about 1875 or thereabouts, but ultimately parts of it
obviously originated from even older Sino-Japanese texts and school materials that sometimes date before the year 1710. To
get a better grip on what the fuller form of the Scroll would look like, one could review the Shin No Shintō Ryū Jōdan No
Maki, section Unjō No Maki 雲上之巻 “ The Book of the Clouds in Heaven” through to the section labeled Manpō Ki'itsu
or, “10,000 Methods Converging As One”.
→ However, the form of those entries would not be identical for this school, they used whatever adaptation of
them despite that the material would look strongly related.
→ Despite the differences that would be usual, this Shin No Shintō Ryū Jōdan No Maki form of the
material would be considered acceptable wherein one was lacking the modified forms more usual to the
Tenjin Shinyō Ryū Ten No Maki. That is because the Shin No Shintō Ryū Jōdan No Maki form was
where they got the Tenjin Shinyō Ryū Ten No Maki version from.
→ One could reconstruct a [form of] the Tenjin Shinyō Ryū Ten No Maki for themselves by
combining this form and the Shin No Shintō Ryū Jōdan No Maki, section Unjō No Maki 雲上之
巻 “The Book of the Clouds in Heaven” through to the section labeled Manpō Ki'itsu or, “10,000
Methods Converging As One”.
