College of Engineering Factor Correction

Biomedical Engineering Department Course Name: Electrical Circuit-II
2nd Year Course Code: EB2203
Second Semester Date: 05 / June / 2020
Semester Deadline: 18 / June / 2020
Part-1 (Theoretical Example)

(3 Marks)

Part-2 (Practical Example)

Estimate the required capacitor value to be connected in parallel in your house to

improve the power factor for your domestic loads those being operated on the local
generator. Given that the source voltage is (220 Vrms) and the frequency is (50 Hz), and
depend on the amount of currents being delivered to you by the generator (for example 4
A, 5 A, 6 A or more). Also, for simplicity assume that the power factor is about 0.8 lagging
as a reasonable and acceptable value in practical estimation done by Electrical Engineers.

Note: Be careful if you want to connect such capacitor in your house to improve the
power factor and try to take the advice for connecting it, and you can ask the Electrician
whom you buy it from to connect an isolated terminal pair wires to be just plugged in
any of the switch plugs or power outlets in your house because all of them are connected
in parallel. If you perform that practically then you can measure and compare the total
current drawn before and after connecting the capacitor.
