TEST I
PROGRAM : MATERIALS ENGINEERING
SUBJECT : CORROSION AND DEGRADATION
CODE : EBB 316
DATE : 10th JUNE 2020
TIME : 1h 15m (3.00 – 4.15 pm)

Instructions:
1. Please write your name and matric number in your answer sheet.
2. Answer all questions and upload your answers in eLearn.
3. The answers must be written manually in your own answer sheet.
4. Please make sure that your handwriting is neat and legible.
1. Corrosion is considered as a troublesome and dangerous process due to its major
impact on health and safety, wastage of materials as well as to the economic loss. However,
there can also be some advantageous aspects if corrosion is managed in a controlled
manner. List down THREE beneficial aspects of corrosion.

(15 marks)

2. Plain carbon steel immersed in seawater has a uniform corrosion rate expressed as
a penetration rate of 5.0 mpy (mils per year, where 1 mil=0.001 in.). Calculate the weight
loss of the carbon steel after 1 year. The density of iron is 7.87 g/cm3. The atomic weight
of Fe is 55.8 g/mol.
(30 marks)

3. An electrochemical cell is constructed such that on one side a pure nickel electrode
in contact with a solution containing Ni2+ ions at a concentration of 3 x 10-3 M. The other
half cell consists of a pure Fe electrode that is immersed in a solution of Fe2+ ions having
a concentration of 0.1 M. At what temperature the potential between the two electrodes
will become +0.140 V? Given the standard electrode potentials, E0 for nickel and iron are
-0.250 V and -0.440 V respectively.
(30 marks)

4. Composite materials consisting of magnesium containing graphite-reinforcing

fibers have been developed to increase the mechanical strength of the light metal
magnesium. Will the introduction of graphite into magnesium pose a problem if this
composite material is used in seawater? Explain your answer based on the Galvanic series
provided in Figure 1.
