Different types of zarzuelas have evolved in
several countries with Spanish heritage,
including the Philippines. At present, there are
two main types of zarzuelas: the romantic and
the baroque. Though most zarzuelas in the
Philippines are performed in Spanish, some are
performed in the Ilocano dialect.
 In the Philippine scene, the Zarzuela is often presented
in a one-act and a three-act presentation. Each act
may consist of four to five songs.
 Songs play an important role in the zarzuela. Songs
function as a part of a dialogue among the characters.
It ushers in the emotional state of the characters. Most
importantly, it provides fun and entertainment. It gives
life to the play.
 Another important aspect or element of the zarzuela is
its plot. A one-act character often deals with central
character involving a certain incident about him/her.
 Most often, the Zarzuela opens with the existing
conflict of the characters which is later resolved at the
end of the play.
 Patricio Geronimo Mariano was a Filipino
nationalist, revolutionary, pundit, poet,
playwright, dramatist, short story writer,
novelist, journalist, violinist, and painter.
Mariano was a Katipunan member.

Celerio was a prolific songwriter. He
is perhaps best known for being a
leaf-player, a feat for which he was
put into the Guinness Book of
World Records. In 1997, he was
named National Artist of the
Philippines for Music.
 Maliwanag na Buwan
 Leon Ignacio learned to play the violin, and at 14, he
was a regular violinist in Juan Molina’s orchestra. He
also learned to play the piano. Then, he started
composing for zarzuwela and eventually became a
respected musical director. He also composed songs for
the movies largely contributing to the development of
Filipino popular songs.
 Dalagang Bukid
 a Filipino writer, playwright, and director of
plays. He used the pen name Lola Basyang. He
was nicknamed “Don Binoy”. Reyes is known as
the “Father of Tagalog Plays” and as the “Father
of the Tagalog Zarzuela.”
