GLOSSARY

GENETIC: Heredity is a biological process whereby a parent passes certain genes onto


their children or offspring
INHERITANCE:  is the process by which an offspring cell or organism acquires or
becomes predisposed to characteristics of its parent cell or organism.
NUCLEIC ACID:  is a chain of nucleotides which stores genetic information
in biological systems
DNA:  is a molecule that contains the instructions an organism needs to develop, live and
reproduce
RNA: is a polymeric molecule essential in various biological roles in coding, decoding,
regulation and expression of genes
NUCLEOTIDES:  consists of a base (one of four chemicals: adenine, thymine, guanine,
and cytosine) plus a molecule of sugar and one of phosphoric acid.

CHROMOSOME: The small bodies in the nucleus of a cell that carry the chemical
“instructions” for reproduction of the cell

GENE: is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes are made up of DNA
