Fire protection
Fire protection complies with EN/UL/CSA 60950-1.
SURPASS hiT 7080 system contains laser devices which operate at high optical power
! levels. Never look into the end of a fiber, fiber connector, fiber patchcord or fiber pigtail.
Permanent eye damage or blindness can result if exposed to such optical power levels,
even for extremely short durations. Always use whatever safety devices are supplied
(caps, shutters, etc.). Read and follow all laser warning labels affixed to the shelf. Use
only approved filtered or attenuated viewing aids or video equipment.
Devices and cards displaying either of the following warning labels contain laser devices
(see Figure 1 and Figure 2).
Figure 2 Warning label for laser equipment as per EN 60825-1 / IEC 60825-1
When operated in a closed system, the laser equipment of the device comforms to class
1 safety level. Nevertheless, in view of possible malfunctions, transmission systems

which are fitted with optical fiber amplifier modules are classified as hazard level 1M.
This hazard level is also applicable if the device is opened.
This hazard class is labelled as shown in Figure 3.
To ensure that the laser hazard level 1M limits are met, no card mechanical modifica-
tions are allowed. If the cards are modified or if the system is not operated according to
the regulations, the operating authorization will expire.
Any optical fiber cable opened on one side should be regarded as being “in operation”.
Never, under any circumstances look into an open plug socket or into an open optical
fiber cable! The laser radiation applied is invisible.
Every optical fiber guided out of the IEC 60825-2:2004+A1:2006 “Controlled Locations”
or “Restricted Locations” must be connected to the correct connector in the system. Oth-
erwise the hazard level admissible for non-controlled locations will not be guaranteed.
Such locations are characterized by not meeting the requirements defined for “Con-
trolled Locations” or “Restricted Locations” pursuant to IEC 60825-2:2004+A1:2006 (in
general, laser hazard level 1 will have to be provided in such locations).

Safety Instructions (SI) Protective measures, handling
To guarantee acceptable system performance, any fibers supplied by the customer that
are connected to SURPASS hiT 7080 components must be terminated with LC connec-
tors. Failure to do so results in unacceptable optical performance. For Small Form-
Factor Pluggable (SFP)/10 Gbps Small Form-Factor Pluggable (XFP) modules, use
only LC connectors without protective cap.
Personnel must be acquainted with, and follow, all safety and handling guidelines as
published by the relevant regulatory agencies for the hazard level(s) designated.
Responsibility for identifying, studying, and adhering to applicable laser, electrical,
mechanical, and other safety standards for the installation, operation, and maintenance
of this equipment is limited to the operator.

In order to connect/disconnect any connector panel cabling, first remove the shelf fan
! unit. Otherwise, there is a risk of personal injury/damage to equipment.
Equipment cooling
Caution: Fan units have rotating parts.
!
Always provide adequate air cooling. The populated shelf must not be operated without
fan unit for more than 2 minutes.
The standard of “Telcordia Technologies Generic Requirements GR-63-CORE Issue 2,
April 2002, (objective O4-14 [78])” defines limit values for heat dissipation. As
SURPASS hiT 7080 operation may significantly exceed heat dissipation limit values, it
is recommended to place the equipment in a well-ventilated area. Fully equipped racks
may require air conditioning to ensure proper ventilation.
To ensure adequate airflow into the shelf’s intake area, all slots of the shelf must be filled
with either cards or filler panels (required for the entire input temperature range).
Information on weight
The maximum weight to be lifted by one person is 18 kg.

enormous damage! Eye injuries might also occur due to light coming out of broken
edges.
Providing good access to optical connectors in the front panel of the cards will make it
easier to unplug the damaged optical connections.
• If the face of the connector is dirty, follow the procedure in the Fiber cleaning instruc-
tions chapter until all dirt particles have been removed.
Handling batteries
Some equipment may contain accumulators or batteries with different technologies (e.g.
lithium batteries or others).

Protective measures, handling Safety Instructions (SI)
In order to prevent loss of data, the battery should only be replaced by the equipment
manufacturer. To do this, remove the SI card as described in the Troubleshooting
Manual (TSMN) and return it in suitable packaging (ESD protection) to the manufac-
turer.
The lithium battery on the SI/SI-E card may only be replaced by an identical type or by
one which is recommended by the manufacturer.
There is a risk of explosion if the battery is not replaced correctly!
Never short-circuit batteries without using a discharging resistor. Without a resistor, high
current ensues and causes risk of explosion.
When disposing batteries, the local regulations applicable to hazardous waste must be
observed (see chapter 2.4).
