Oleochemicals are….

In Southeast Asia, the major raw

Oleochemicals refer material being used to produce
chemicals derived from oleochemicals are palm oil, palm
natural oils and fats of both kernel oil, and coconut oil as these
plant and animal origin. crops are grown abundantly in this region

1. Refinery Overview
The source of the raw material will
impact the applications .

The raw material we will consider is

Crude Palm Kernel Oil (CPKO), Crude
Coconut Oil (CNO), Crude Palm Oil (CPO),
and Refined Bleached Deodorized Palm

Advantages

 Competitiveness with petrochemical raw materials

 In the last decade, the oleochemical industry has been growing

steadily due to increased global demand for more environment-
friendly product.

 This is because of oleochemicals attractive traits:

 Derived from renewable resources (raw material availability)
 Non toxic
 Readily biodegradable
 “Green image”
 Better dermatological compatibility
Market Trends

 Europe/USA: Market stable

 South America: growing market
 SEA/China/India: Higher growing market

 Future Market leaders will be the Oil

producers, which will drive the
Oleochemical capacity growth;
 Oil producers will go further
downstream Oleochemical production
What is Fatty Acids ?

Fatty Acids
 Are aliphatic acids with chain length from C6 up to C22
CH3(CH2)nCH2COOH, (n = 4 – 20)
 General formula of CnH2nO2, for Saturated Fatty Acid
 Whereas the Unsaturated ones have the formulas CnH2n-2O2,
CnH2n-4O2 and CnH2n-6O2 for the acids containing single, double and
triple bond respectively.
n = number of Carbon atoms
 Are predominantly linear and monohydric.
 Can be saturated or have one or more double bonds.
 Are classified as natural or synthetic depending on the raw
materials.
 Their derivatives are used in major components in toilet soap
manufacture, Plasticizer, High – performance lubricant, food/
medium – chain triglyceride, polymers, oil additives and cosmetics
ingredient.
What is Glycerine?
A colorless, odorless, hygroscopic and sweet tasting viscous liquid.
Glycerine is very soluble in water, even at room temperature.
A three carbon alcohol.
The backbone of the triglyceride molecule.
Glycerine has the chemical structure shown below :

Names for Glycerine:

HCH OH  Glycerol
 Glycerine
HC OH  1,2,3 – propanetriol
 Propane – 1,2,3 – triol
HCH OH  Trihydroxy propane
 Glycyl alcohol
What is Fatty Alcohols?

Fatty Alcohols
Are aliphatic alcohols with chain length from C6 up to C22
CH3(CH2)nCH2OH, (n = 4 – 20)
Are predominantly linear and monohydric.
Can be saturated or have one or more double bonds.
Are classified as natural or synthetic depending on the raw materials.
Melting point and boiling points increase uniformly with chain length.
Decanol and higher fatty alcohols can be considered as immiscible with
water.
A slight hygroscopic is observed water vapour from air during storage.
Their derivatives are used in base of surfactants for laundry detergent
product, shampoos, dishwashing liquids, and cleaning agent, defoamer,
excellent plasticizer/ PVC, and cosmetics.
