Medication Safety Assessment

for Community / Ambulatory

Pharmacies

Medication Safety

defined as freedom from preventable harm

with medication use
(ISMP Canada, 2007)
• These key elements are used a
as learning tools when
evaluating
the safety of medication use
within the pharmacy

• Thus, the assessment tool is a

standardized method to
evaluate each element to
establish the medication safety
in the community pharmacy
Of course you need
to provide your
readers with the itsy-
That is the bigger bitsy details to
further establish the
idea of medication
picture… safety assessment in
a community/
ambulatory
pharmacies
How to present the itsy-bitsy details of
the bigger picture?
• Rationale points I gave yesterday (used to build your idea)
• Research impediments
• Significance of the study

• Imagine you are a lawyer defending a man who committed murder… how
will you persuade others to acquit that man, given the presence of
evidences? That is how you build your chapter 1 and chapter 2
• Structure: general discussion of the topic down to the particular topic
• Example:
• Medication safety discuss it first, then discuss individually the
key elements assigned to you
• Probe the idea of the research and where is the gap?
• Suggested move 1: establish a research territory
• Show how the research’s central idea, how it is problematic, and
what is the relevance

Chapter 2 • Introduce these ideas by reviewing and citing previous researches

• Suggested move 2: establish your own research niche (space or gap)
• Indicate a gap you have seen in the previous researches (e.g.
Philippines has not abundant data on medication safety in the
community; mostly in hospitals only)
• Or you can also present the niche, as an expansion of the previous
idea in researches you have reviewed
• Suggested move 3: Occupy your own niche (space)
• Outline the purpose of the research/ associate with the
significance to prove the basis of the study
• 2.1 Medication safety
• Include discussions
• What other topics are relevant to this
• 2.2 Key elements of medication safety (focus on
the elements assigned to your group)
• 2.2.1 Patient information (build data on this)
Chapter 2 • 2.2.2 Drug information (build data on this)
(sample idea) • 2.3 Medication Safety in the Community
Pharmacy
• at this point you can present the gap
• Expand your idea but make sure you do not
cross your previously stated territory
• 2.4 Medication Safety in Philippine
Community Pharmacies
