ABSTRACT

The oxo-acids and oxo-acid salts of boron and the elements of groups IV–VII of the
periodic table, from the second short period onwards, contain anions which can be
considered as based on MO x units, where M is the group element and x can have
values from 1–6.

EXPERIMENTAL

i) TECHNIQUES USED

¿SUCTION FILTRATION
The solution of borax and NaOH was then allowed to cool in a cold-water bath so that it
forms precipitate. The precipitate was filtered off using suction filtration.

ii) SOURCES OF STARTING MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT

Borax, NaOH, sulphuric acid, potassium permanganate solution, potassium iodide
solution and titanium (IV) oxo-sulphate sulphate solutions were materials which were
used during the experiment and were provided and put by the benches. Equipment
used which include Buchannan flask and funnel, beakers and staring rods were sourced
from laboratory lockers.

iii) About 3g of borax was dissolved in NaOH. Hydrogen per-oxide was added to the
solution after solution was cooled by a cold-water bath. Suction filtration was to filter of
the precipitate formed, which was then washed with alcohol and ether.
Furthermore, the precipitate, (sodium per-oxoborate hexahydrate) was quantitively
analysed by mixing it with HCl & KMnO4, HCl & KI as well as Titanium (IV) oxosulphate
& excess NaF solutions.

iv) MASS & MOLES OF REACTANTS (calculations)

mass of Borax = 2.999g

moles of Borax = mass/MM = 3.999g/381g/mol

= 0.04150mols
