EXPERIMENT No: 5

EXPERIMENT TITLE: REACTIONS OF CHROMIUM AND MANGANESE

SURNAME: NGOMA
FIRST NAME: BOYCE
ID NUMBER: 201701647

LAB GROUP: MONDAY

DATE OF THE EXPERIMENT: 02 SEPTEMBER 2019

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT
The sim of the experiment is to prepare reactions of chromium and manganese.

INTRODUCTION
Chromium and manganese are "transition metals" occupying the middle of the periodic
table. Nearly two-thirds of the elements of the periodic table are transition metals, in
which the d and f atomic orbitals are being filled. Those at the far right: Cu, Ag, Au and
Zn, Cd, Hg--are unusual, more "normal" elements in which the members of a column
resemble one another. In them, the d shell is filled with its complement of 10 electrons,
so d-electrons only play a role when they are promoted to higher orbitals, and do not
dominate the chemistry. Chromium and manganese each have a half-filled d-shell,
which is responsible for their unique properties. To the right are the triads (Fe, Co, Ni),
(Ru, Rh, Pd), and (Os, Ir, Pt), all odd metals.
