Energy Data Collection, December 2014 2 | 11

INTRODUCTION

1. Scope and aims

The Energy Use in the Steel Industry project was open to all worldsteel members and national and regional
associations during 2011 to 2013. Two versions of the energy report, confidential and public, were published in
2014. The web tool, Energy Data Collection System (EDCS), supports worldsteel members by providing a mature
evaluation system of their energy efficiency at site and facility level.

The goal is to enable steel producers to make a fair comparison of their own energy consumption compared to a
practical industry and competitor reference at both site and facility level, therefore allowing steel producers to
systematically determine the areas where energy efficiency can be improved.

Users of the web tool will be able to:

• Calculate their energy performance and compare it to the reference data at the site and facility level (for
example, sinter plant, or hot strip mill)
• Compare their energy performance with peer companies at the site and facility level
• Calculate the energy improvement potential and run scenarios for various technologies or practices in future
years
• Analyse the performance gap to understand which part of the gap is due to raw material selection and which
part can be closed using good practices and energy efficient technologies
• Analyse the gap performance on a process by process basis (Raw materials through to Hot Rolling) identifying
each area of non-performance and extent compared to the reference
• Test the effectiveness of your energy saving technologies if they measure up against the industry best
• Test or justify (e.g., energy intensity benefit/t crude steel) implementing new technologies with a clear and
practical energy saving potential

2. A secure database for data collection

The database is hosted on dedicated servers with ISO 27001 accreditation. Great care has been taken to ensure
that data from your own company’s steel plants will be known only to you and the worldsteel staff administering the
project. Participating steel companies cannot view each other’s’ data. At worldsteel, the Director of Technology and
the Energy project administrator are the only people who can see all the data submitted, and even then can only
see the sites on a coded basis.

ACCESS

3. Accessing the Energy Data Collection System

To access the Energy Data Collection System (EDCS) you need a user ID and Password. These are only
available on application to worldsteel (contact: technology@worldsteel.org or sear@worldsteel.org). You will
receive your user ID and password via e-mail, the system must be accessed within 24 hours of it being sent
otherwise the system will nullify the login details.

3.1 Superusers and Users

There are two levels of access to the EDCS: Superusers and Users. A Superuser oversees the data collection and
approves data for a company overall once it has been input by the Users. Superuser accounts are created by the
project administrator at worldsteel following the nomination of a Superuser by a company or association. A
Superuser is then assisted by an administrator to manage sites (one for each steel plant) and the User accounts for
those sites.

A User enters the data for a specific site into the EDCS. User accounts are managed by the Superuser. A User can
also edit the data they have entered and submit the data to the Superuser. After the Superuser has approved the
submission, the User can view the Reporting of their own data but can no longer change the data, worldsteel
administrators have to open the database again if changes are needed and repeat the verification and approval
process again.

3.2 To log in
Go to URL: https://energy.worldsteel.org
Enter your user ID (your e-mail address) and password into the boxes provided.
When you have successfully logged in, the Energy Data Collection System home page appears.

3.3 Changing your password

Your user name appears in the top right corner on every screen.
Underneath, click on Change password to enter a new password.

3.4 Home page

The sections available to you appear in a menu along the top of the screen. From the home page you can access
up to four components of the EDCS:
• Data Collection
• Reporting
• Administration
• Log Off
Click on the desired section to go to that page. Note: access to the sections depends on your user status.

3.5 To log out

Click on Log Off to go back to the login screen.

3.6 Superuser
Sections available: Data Collection, Reporting.
A Superuser can only see data for the sites for their company and responsibility.
Superuser responsibilities include: managing sites and users, approving data submitted by a User, requesting data
corrections, deleting unapproved data submitted by a User.

3.7 User
Sections available: Data Collection, Reporting.
User responsibilities include: entering and editing correctly data, submitting data for approval.

ADMINISTRATION

4. Administration [Superusers]

Superusers manage the sites and users, and worldsteel energy project manager assists to create Sites and User
accounts. Superusers contact the worldsteel energy project manager to confirm the Company Code and manage
their Site Code anonymously. Please complete Table 1 and send to worldsteel energy project manager.

DATA COLLECTION

5. Easy way to collect data

Data collection through an Excel template is the easiest way to collect data from your reports or systems and
avoids timing out of the internet systems.
The template allows the key data sets to be completed over time and it is important that units and cells locations
are not altered.
The whole data sheet can be uploaded directly into the system once completed avoiding having to key it in again,
even multiple sheets for different sites can be uploaded.
To assist worldsteel members, the Energy Data Collection System (EDCS) was developed in English primarily and
translated into French, Russian and Chinese. In the web-based EDCS, the language can be changed by selecting
the option in the upper right of the screen. (More languages can be made available in future through translating a
small number of keywords).

5.1 Download Excel template

Log into the Energy Data Collection System, click Download Excel template under Data Collection (Figure 1).

Figure 1 Download Excel template

Excel template has 13 sheets as shown in Figure 2. The language can be changed in the physical data sheet/top-
left corner. A detailed user guide for the template is available on a video file, energy_template_tutorial.wmv, which
can be downloaded from the Appendices CD of the Energy Use in the Steel Industry report.

DATA COLLECTION
5.2 Data input
The physical data sheet is the main sheet for data input. Cells shaded yellow are available for input. Blue cells
within the sheet are calculated based on other values. Figure 3 shows colour definitions for the data input sheet.

5.3 Import Excel file

Click Import Excel file under Data Collection (Figure 4). After the Excel file has been imported, you can check the
data in Data Collection >>Physical Data. Note that the web tool only accepts files saved in Excel 97-2003.

5.4 Submit and approve

Superuser/user can find the Energy Data Set (Figure 5) through Data Collection>>Physical data>> Back to
dataset (bottom of Physical data screen) and Submit, Approve, Unapprove Draft or Delete data sets.

REPORTING

6. Reporting online and download

Superusers/users can view the analysis results online under the category Reporting which includes Ranking by
site, Ranking by process, and Saving potential. Analysis results can also be downloaded by selecting Export Excel
file (Figure 6).

Figure 6 Category for reporting the analysis results

6.1 Ranking by site

Ranking by site provides four levels of analysis results which include site, hot rolled products, crude steel and
primary metal production in two different routes of iron ore based and scrap based steel. Filtering criteria enables to
show the results with your requirements of year, organisation, region and country. Click the Show button to display
the analysis results (Figure 7). Click your sites in Site ranking bar chart to display the site score water fall chart
(Figure 8). Click/put mouse pointer on the bar of each process in Site score water fall chart to display the
process water fall chart.

REPORTING
6.2 Ranking by process
Ranking by process enables to examine different process analysis results in respect to different steelmaking
facilities in two different routes of iron ore based and scrap based steel. Filtering criteria allows you to see the
results with your requirements of year, organisation, region and country. Click the Show button to view the analysis
results (Figure 9).
