Overview
Kannada University, located in Hampi, Karnataka, was established by the Karnataka
government through the Kannada University Act, 1991 exclusively to disseminate
knowledge in the Kannada language and spread culture, traditions, and literature of
Karnataka.
Kannada University is a research-based University to spread Kannada language and state
history, archaeology, folklore, tribal, development, music and culture. It is divided into 19
departments and offers regular programmes- UG, PG, Integrated and Doctoral level courses
in various specializations. KU believes in comprehensive learning and has evolved many
programmes to spread knowledge through distance education to help those who have
monetary constraints, family issues or job commitments and thus cannot join a regular
course to study.
The popular specializations offered by the college include Hindustani Classical Vocal,
Kannada Literature and Language, Journalism and Women’s Studies. It is a residential
university and covers an area of 680 acres popularly named as ‘Vidyaranya’. It is home to a
rare species of medicinal creepers, fruit-bearing vine, peacocks and rabbits.

Graduate and Post Graduate Courses
For admission to the Graduation and Postgraduation programmes university
conducts entrance tests to evaluate prospective candidates. Eligible students are
selected based on scores and ranking obtained.
KU offers a bachelor in Hindustani Classical Vocal, Painting and Sculpture for 3 years.

Doctoral Courses
Kannada University offers M.Phil. and Ph.D. programme at the doctoral level to
research students. They can specialize in different fields like Kannada Literature,
Manuscriptology and Ancient Studies, Anthropology and Sciences, Tribal and Folklore
Studies, etc.
To be eligible for admission to the M.Phil. and Ph.D. programme, applicants must
have a postgraduation degree of 2 years with atleast 55% marks and appear for an
Entrance Test conducted by the university. Selected candidates are called for a
personal interview round and then shortlisted candidates are offered admission.

KU offers a unique programme to candidates who have precise knowledge of the related field even
if they do not have a formal education degree. Candidates should have accurate knowledge that
should have contributed to the specific field.
Eligible candidates must submit a proposal with official records and reports to prove their
excellence in related fields.
