II. Project Summary

The Cambridge Dictionary defines grammar as the study or use of the rules about how
words change their form and combine with other words to express meaning. In line with this, it
is very important that a student must have a knowledge in the grammatical system of the
language and the proper usage of it.

According to Yeats (2002), as cited in Pourhosin Gilakjani (2016), pronunciation is the

production of sounds that is used for making meaning. Pronunciation is the production of sound
system wicch doesn’t interfere with communication, either from the speakers or the listeners
viewpoint (Paulston and Burber, 1976).

In line with the fact above, the researchers wanted to promote the grammar awareness
and developing pronunciation among the grade 8 students of Aglalana Integrated School and
therefore, becoming them a competitive good speakers of the English Language.
As the Asia EFL journal stated that the Philippines is composed of Filipino English
teachers that offer advantages of both non-native teachers due to the way in which they
developed their own English ability, the researchers got interested to introduce the English
Application Learning for Pinoy in teaching grammar and pronunciation, not only to equip
students about grammar and pronunciation but to develop the communication skills that are
needed in facing the global economy.

The implementation of this teaching application will start from November 2019 to March
2020. Which will be conducted every classes of each learning area.

This instruction will help the students to increase their grammar awareness and improve
their pronunciation difficulties.

III. Project Background

This innovation has a main goal of addressing the need of improving the basic English
Proficiency of the students of Aglalana Integrated School to meet the demand of the world. In
our school there are many problems that the learners have when they deal with pronunciation
and grammar. It is but transparent that the students were unable to master the basics that
they need in their current level. One of the reason that the teachers noticed when teaching
grammar and pronunciation is that students shows no interest in the lesson, they tend to talk
with their friends, and they did not pay attention at all. Thus, these triggers the teachers to find
an alternative way of teaching pronunciation and grammar in an innovative and enjoyable way.
This is when we started innovating our teaching with the use of Learning English Application for
Pinoy (LEAP). The software contains accent-neutral and free from culture based idiomatic
expression. The application is tailor-suited for Filipinos and does not intend to replace English
teachers; rather its aim to augment English language learning.

IV. Objectives:

1. To improve the communication skills of students in English.

2. To enhance the spoken skills of students.

3. To enhance the grammatical skills of the students.

4. To let the students enjoy learning English.

V. Project Methodology

The grammar and vocabulary module is designed to improve communication skills in

English in order to cope with the demands of working in a global workplace. The program
consists of various types of exercises that guide the user in improving his/her vocabulary,
grammar and reading comprehension. A student is not allowed to proceed to the next exercise
unless he/she gets the required number of correct items. Passing rate for each exercise is 60
percent.

The speech module on the other hand is composed of lectures, drills and exercises to
enhance skills in spoken English. It is designed to improve diction, proper pronunciation and
articulation, accent and fluency in English.

In the exercises, the user is asked to record his/her voice either by reading sentences or
by repeating the words he/she heard. The machine will then check if the user has spoken the
sentence correctly.

Just like the grammar and vocabulary module, the passing rate for the speech module is
60 percent.
