Tutorial Transition metal

1. Write the electron configuration for the following atom/ions:

a) Cr
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d5 4s1

b) Fe2+
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d6

c) Mn
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p63d54s2

d) Co2+
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p63d10

e) Cu+
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p63d104s1

f) Mn5+
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p63d2

g) V3+
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p63d2

h) Ni2+
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p63d8

2.  Explain why Fe2+ ion can easily oxidized to Fe3+.

- Fe2+ ion can easily oxidized to Fe3+ ion because removing the electron results in a half filled d-
orbital.
- The ions with odd charge are most stable for atoms with an even atomic number.

3. Explain why aqueous solutions of transition metal ions are coloured while those of main group metal
ions are not.
- This is due to atom attachment to metal ion (ligand).
