1.1 Definition
 Work - is the amount of energy transferred by a force acting through
a distance (units : N.m)
 Power - is the time rate at which work is done (units : J/s , watt)
horse power is the British unit of power.
 Grid Net Work - is the national electricity net work connecting
together all of the electricity production power plant in the country.
 State -description of a matter at a given time.

 process- occurs when matter passes from one state to another.

 Cycle - a given mass of fluid passes through a process.

 Energy - is the capacity of a physical system to do work (units :
joule, ergs). it is the amount of work that can be done by a force.
In a more general term, energy is the capacity of
- Doing work
- Generate heat
- Emitting light
 Heat energy is the ability to

I - change the temperature of an object

II – phase of a substance, i.e.

 Types of energy comes in various forms such as :

 What is power plant?

A power plant is assembly of systems or subsystems to generate

electricity, i.e., power with economy and requirements. The power
plant itself must be useful economically and environmental friendly to
the society.

 Power plant is assembly of systems or subsystems to generate electricity,

i.e., to produce power with economy and requirements.

 So the power produced must be

1. economically useful.

2. Environmental friendly to society

Therefore, power plant can be defined as : “a machine or assembly of

equipment that generate and deliver a flow of mechanical or electrical
energy.

 power plant may also be defined as: The engineering and technology

required for the production of central station electric power

1.3 Thermodynamics revision of power cycles

 The power cycle is the continuous conversion of heat into work.

 Thermodynamic analysis of power cycle is the study of the behavior

of working.
 substances undergoing a change of phase such as steam, or the

behavior of gas when used as working substance.

 The behavior of the working fluid through the power cycle is

known as “process”, where “process occurs when matter passes
from one state to another”
