Automatic Sprinkler Systems
CHAPTER 1
AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEMS

Automatic sprinkler protection is recommended for industrial and other buildings having combustible construction or combustible occupancies. There are many
FM Approved types of automatic sprinklers. Typical examples include: upright, pendent, flush, recessed, concealed, sidewall, dry-pendent and dry-upright, Early
Suppression Fast Response (ESFR), Quick Response (QR), extended coverage, corrosion resistant, large drop, rack storage and decorative coated. A sprinkler
operates automatically when the heat-actuated element is heated to, or above, its thermal rating. Selection of the proper temperature rating for automatic
sprinklers is important. The proper rating provides a factor of safety designed to prevent premature operation. The rating should be selected from the following
table:

TEMPERATURE RATINGS OF SPRINKLERS

Max Temperature at Rated Temperature of

Rating Sprinkler Level Sprinkler Frame Color

Ordinary 100°F 135° through 170°F Unpainted

*
(38°C) (57° through 77°C)
150°F 175° through 225°F

Intermediate (66°C) (79° through 107°C) White

225°F 250° through 300°F

High (107°C) (121° through 149°C) Blue

300°F 325° through 375°F

Extra High (149°C) (163° through 191°C) Red

365°F 400° through 475°F

Very Extra High (185°C) (204° through 246°C) Green

465°F 500° through 650°F

Ultra High (241°C) (260° through 343°C) Orange

*Frame arms of 135°F (57°C) sprinklers of some manufacturers are painted black.

Sprinklers of ‘‘very extra high’’ and ‘‘ultra high’’ ratings are primarily used for internal protection of chambers such as ovens and dryers having working
temperatures above 300°F (149°C). When the sprinklers are normally heated to the working temperature of the oven or dryer, under accidental fire conditions they
will operate fast enough for safe protection. However, when the sprinklers are initially at the same temperature as a cold oven or dryer, operation may be so
severely retarded that the oven or dryer is virtually without internal sprinkler protection.

Specially coated or plated sprinklers are available for use where corrosion resistance is desired and decorative coated sprinklers are available for areas where
improved appearance is desired. For corrosion resistance, wax is satisfactory except in extreme atmospheres. Wax has too low a melting point for high-degree
heads, whereas a bituminous coating affords some protection. A lead coating protects against certain mild corrosive atmospheres. Wax-over-lead provides good
sprinkler protection. Corrosion resistant sprinklers such as those manufactured from stainless steel or other corrosion resistant materials currently afford the
best available protection. Common decorative finishes are bright brass, chrome, paint, or polyester coating. These finishes are for decorative purposes only and
are not FM Approved for corrosion resistance.

Only sprinklers supplied by the listed manufacturers are FM Approved. .Any change in the device after it leaves the manufacturer voids the Approval. Coated,
plated and painted sprinklers rated above 165°F (74°C) have the standard temperature color code either on the frame arms or on the compression screws, except
in the case of bulb type decorative coated sprinklers in which the bulb fluid color indicates the temperature rating per the following table:

When selecting a specific type of sprinkler, refer to the FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets to ensure that the sprinkler selected is capable of
providing adequate fire protection for the intended occupancy. In addition, working plans of proposed layouts, showing all details with respect to location of
sprinklers and piping, description of the occupancy and details of construction, should be sent to your insurance company for review before the materials are
fabricated. The plans will be accepted or changes will be recommended to assure that the work will be done according to the best practice and to avoid the
possibility of later requests for changes.
Unless otherwise noted, automatic sprinkler system components, which are subjected to system water pressure, have a rated working pressure of 175 psi (1205
kPa).

In this section, FM Approved sprinklers are listed in a tabular format.

Because this format limits the space in which the information can be provided, the following conventions are used:

The sprinkler nominal discharge coefficient (K-factor) is expressed in US customary units of gal/min/(psi) ½.
Sprinkler response categories are abbreviated as follows:

SR Standard Response
QR Quick Response
FR Suppression Mode Fast Response

Heat responsive elements are identified as either Fusible or, in the case of bulb type elements, with the nominal bulb diameter in millimeters (e.g., 2.5 mm, 3 mm,
etc.). Nominal thread sizes are expressed using American National Standard Taper Pipe Threads (NPT). Sprinklers intended for sale outside the United States
shall have threads which are in compliance with other national or international standards as permitted at the sole discretion of FM Approvals.

Sprinkler finishes are identified as follows:

Finish Description
Brass Unfinished, Plain Brass or Bronze
Chrome Chrome Plated
Black Plated Black Plated
Bright Brass Bright Brass Plated
Lead Lead Coated (for extra corrosion protection in some atmospheres)
Wax Wax Coated (for extra corrosion protection in some atmospheres)
Wax Over Lead Wax Over Lead Coated (for extra corrosion protection in some atmospheres)
Polyester Polyester Coated (any color)
Painted Painted (any color)

Sprinkler nominal temperature ratings are expressed in degrees Fahrenheit (°F) followed by the equivalent in degrees Celsius (°C).

Control Mode Sprinklers

K2.8 Standard Spray Sprinklers

Control mode standard spray sprinklers have deflectors specially designed to discharge water in all directions below the plane of the deflector. Thus, the spray pattern is roughly that of a half sphere
filled with water spray. Little or no water is discharged upward to wet the ceiling. Upright control mode sprinklers are not intended for use in the pendent position; FM Approved pendent control mode
½
sprinklers are required. Control mode automatic sprinklers with a nominal discharge coefficient of 2.8 gal/min/(psi) have cross sectional3 dimensions of the water passageway less than 8 in. and may
require the use of individual or system strainers per the appropriate FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets.

K5.6 Rack Storage

Rack storage sprinklers (also called intermediate level sprinklers) provide in-rack protection for rack storage arrays. These sprinklers are similar to the basic sprinkler types from which they are derived
½½
except that they are equipped with a disc mounted above the thermal-sensitive element which protects it from delayed operation as a result of water discharge ½ from nearby sprinklers at higher
elevations. Rack storage sprinklers are available with nominal discharge coefficients of 5.6 gal/min/(psi) , 8.0 gal/min/(psi) and 11.2 gal/min/(psi) and in both upright and pendent configurations. When
using quick response rack storage sprinklers, standard response sprinklers will continue to be required at the ceiling level in accordance with the FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets.
Reference should be made to the FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets with regard to selection of type and temperature rating for a given installation.

K8.0 Flush, Recessed and Concealed (Pendent)

½ ½
Pendent flush, recessed and concealed sprinklers with a nominal discharge coefficient of 8.0 gal/min/(psi) are similar to those with a nominal discharge coefficient of 5.6 gal/min/(psi) except that they
discharge 40% more water at the same discharge pressure. These sprinklers are intended for use with a concealed piping system. Flush types are constructed with an operating element which extends a
short distance below the ceiling. Upon actuation, the sprinkler deflector drops below the ceiling level to provide a proper water distribution. Recessed types consist of a sprinkler installed in a decorative
recessed cup which reduces the protrusion of the sprinkler from the ceiling. Concealed types incorporate a cover plate which is heat activated and can be manually removed to prevent over-painting of the
cover plate. All of these sprinkler types are intended for use where attractive appearance under a ceiling is desired, in such occupancies as offices, hotel lobbies, dining rooms, clubs and similar
properties.

FM Approved flush, recessed and concealed sprinklers are limited to a maximum temperature rating of 225°F (107°C) and to protection of hazard occupancies described in the FM Global Property Loss
Prevention Data Sheets. Quick response flush recessed and concealed sprinklers are FM Approved for use in Wet Systems and Pre-action Systems qualifying as Wet Systems only.

except that they are equipped with a disc mounted above the thermal-sensitive element which protects it from delayed operation as a result of water discharge ½ from nearby sprinklers at higher

K8.0 Wax Coated, High Temperature

There are instances where high temperature sprinklers, rated 250-300°F (121-149°C), are installed for purposes other than expected ambient temperatures above 225°F (107°C) and where the
environment is corrosive. The sprinklers listed below have been coated with a wax normally intended for intermediate temperature sprinklers, 175-225°F (79-107°C) These sprinklers are not
recommended for installation in areas where the ambient temperature may exceed 150°F (66°C).

K8.0 Extended Coverage Light Hazard (ECLH), Flush, Recessed and Concealed (Pendent or Sidewall)

Control mode, Extended Coverage-Light Hazard (ECLH) flush, recessed and concealed sprinklers are ECLH sprinklers intended for use with a concealed piping system. Flush pendent types are
constructed with an operating element which extends a short distance below the ceiling. Upon actuation, the sprinkler deflector drops below the ceiling level to provide a proper water distribution.
Recessed pendent types consist of a sprinkler installed in a decorative recessed cup which reduces the protrusion of the sprinkler from the ceiling. Concealed pendent types incorporate a cover plate
which is heat activated and can be manually removed to prevent over-painting of the cover plate. Sidewall flush, recessed and concealed sprinklers are similar to pendent flush recessed and concealed
sprinklers except that they are designed to be installed in a wall near the junction of the ceiling and wall. They are equipped with a special deflector which discharges most of the water in a forward
direction. All of these sprinkler types are intended for use in light hazard occupancies where attractive appearance under a ceiling is desired. The FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets should
be closely followed when designing and installing automatic fire protection systems utilizing these sprinklers. Quick response ECLH flush recessed and concealed sprinklers are FM Approved for use in
Wet Systems and Pre-action Systems qualifying as Wet Systems only.

SINGLE CHECK VALVES

Single check valves are used in fire protection systems to allow waterflow in one direction only. Typical applications are at
connections between public water supplies and private fire service systems, at the discharge from fire pumps, at gravity tank
connections and at fire service pumper connections.
Valves identified in the listing by a single asterisk (*) have side covers; valves identified by a double asterisk (**) have no
removable covers; others have top covers. Clearance must be provided for side-cover valves to permit clapper removal.
Valves without covers must be removed from the system for clapper replacement or repair. Unless otherwise noted in the
listing, these valves have 175 psi (1205 kPa) rated working pressure.

GROOVED COUPLINGS

Grooved couplings are used to join pipe and fittings in both wet and dry sprinkler systems. Unless otherwise noted, these couplings are intended to
provide some flexibility in piping systems. Typical applications are in sprinkler risers, in feed mains passing through walls from one building area to
another, in locations subject to earthquakes, in the discharge line from aboveground pump suction tanks, in new connections to existing feed mains
and in air or water fire service lines subject to excessive vibration or difficult alignment.
Unless otherwise noted, these couplings are limited to use with rolled or cut groove-ended pipe, valves and fittings, at a minimum rated working
pressure of 175 psi (1205 kPa) and are suitable for aboveground service. Higher rated pressures are noted in the text of the listing. Selection of
pipe schedules for use with grooved pipe couplings should be made according to applicable FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets
installation standards. These pipe schedules determine system pressure ratings and may take precedence over the higher rated working
pressures listed for some couplings.
Installation must be made according to the manufacturer’s instructions and requirements. Where couplings are used to join FM Approved pipe, the
pipe manufacturer’s installation instructions and requirements must also be observed. Grooves should be made according to ANSI/AWWA C606
(latest edition), ‘‘Grooved and Shouldered Joints’’, unless otherwise specified.
FM Approved grooved pipe couplings joining steel pipe may be used in underground service, subject to the installation restrictions placed upon the
pipe and to the coupling manufacturer’s recommendations and requirements.
Unless otherwise stated in the listing, these couplings have been evaluated for a maximum ambient temperature of 225°F (107°C), suitable for use
in normal warehouse protection. For special applications, temperatures, or environments, the manufacturer’s recommendations and requirements
are to be followed.

Grooved Couplings, Standard — Flexible

These couplings join pipe, valves or fittings having equal nominal-sized diameters.

PIPE FITTINGS

These fittings are suitable for interconnecting piping, valves and other components in both wet and dry automatic sprinkler systems. Installation
should be according to applicable sprinkler system fabrication rules. These rules limit the minimum size of sprinkler piping to 1 in., nominal.
FMApproved pipe fittings of smaller sizes are intended for use as valve trim, gauge connections, and for other peripheral service. The water flow
path of the sprinkler system cannot be designed using smaller sizes than 1 in., nominal. Unless otherwise noted in the listing, these fittings have
175 psi (1205 kPa) rated working pressure.
Threaded connections on fittings can be made to FM Approved threadable thinwall pipe or to Schedule 40 pipe. Refer to the ‘‘Steel Pipe’’ listings
for a summary of the various types of FMApproved steel pipe suitable for threading or grooving.
The fittings manufacturer’s installation instructions must be observed in all cases. When connections are made to FM Approved pipe, the pipe
manufacturer’s installation instructions must also be followed.
Unless otherwise stated below, the maximum ambient temperature to which these fittings should be subjected is 225°F (107°C).

Standard grooved-end fittings for use with Victaulic FM Approved grooved couplings.

Each system consists of a grooved end Victaulic Venturi for use with Victaulic FMApproved grooved couplings, a differential pressure meter reading in gpm or dm /min
and associated fittings. Systems are available with either a 4 2 in. dial meter (Model S) or a 6 in. dial meter (Model L). Portable installations (meter mounted on Venturi)
or permanent installations (wall or panel mounted meter) are available with either model. Max rated working pressure 500 psi (3445 kPa) for systems with Model S dial
meter, 175 psi (1205 kPa) for systems with Model L dial meter.

PUMP SUCTION TANKS

Steel tanks for fire pump suction are used to provide a reliable source of water at desired rates and durations for fire protection purposes under
anticipated design conditions. Tanks consist of a cylindrical shell, floor and a roof all of which rest on a foundation. Tanks are filled with water from
an outside source and withdrawn in emergency situations. Accessory items are provided to monitor the water level, gain access for inspection and
repair and to prevent positive and negative pressures which could impair the structural integrity of the tank. Consideration shall be given to tank
heating equipment and/or insulation in colder regions to keep water from freezing. FM Approvals recognizes five (5) earthquake zones: 50-yr;
100-yr; 250-yr; 500-yr; and 500-yr. With this methodology, zone 50-yr is the most severe. These earthquake zones are unique to FM Global
and FM Approvals and do not necessarily correlate with the zoning of other code bodies such as the AWWA. Refer to the earthquake maps
contained in FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-2 to determine the applicable earthquake zone. An approximate correlation is shown below.
