SUBJECT : LATERAL VIBRATION

ISO 10816 Standards provide guidance for evaluating vibration severity in machines operating in the 10 to 200 Hz (600
to 12,000 RPM) frequency range.
Examples of these types of machines are small, direct-coupled, electric motors and pumps, production motors, medium
motors, generators, steam and gas turbines, turbo-compressors, turbo-pumps and fans. Some of these machines can be
coupled rigidly or flexibly, or connected through gears. The axis of the rotating shaft may by horizontal, vertical or
inclined at any angle. The required vibration severity of 4.5mm/s RMS is satisfactory based on the below chart combined
with additional factors to judge the overall vibration severity of equipment.

In general, generator as rotating machine is satisfactory less than 4.5mm/s RMS.

On the other hand, the vibration severity of package unit AC generator driven by a diesel engine for fixed and mobile
installations with rigid and/or resilient mountings is applicable to ISO 8528 (Reciprocating internal combustion engine
driven alternating current generating sets – Part 9 : Measurement and evaluation of mechanical vibrations)
Rated power output Vibration velocity, Vrms
Declared engine speed
of the generating set RIC engine Generator Remark
min-1
kW mm/s mm/s
≥ 1300 but >100 but ≤200 45 25
< 2000 >200 45 20
Consequently, above table of vibration velocity of reciprocating internal combustion engine driven AC generating sets
(based on Table C.1, ISO8528-9) is applicable to Vendor’s packaged diesel engine generating set.
