(1) State of stress at a point in 2D is given as

5 1.5
1.5 2
Magnitudes of the stress components are in MPa.
(a) Calculate components Pi of the stress vector on a plan for which the
normal makes angles 60o with respect to x axis.
(b) Calculate the magnitude of the stress vector normal to the plane (σ)
and
in-plane (τ). Observe the direction of shearing. Is it logical?
(c) Calculate the magnitude of the total stress vector Pi.
(d) Sketch the stress vector and its components

(2) For given a state of stress in problem (1), determine

(a) Principal stresses,
(b) Principal stress directions with respect to x-axis,
(c) Principal stress deviations, and
(d) Greatest shearing stress.
Verify your answer using Mohr’s circle.
(3) Repeat the exercise 3 for following state of stress and sketch the directions of
principal stresses with respect to x-axis.
(a) σx = 2 MPa, σy = 5 MPa and τxy = 1.5 MPa
(b) σx = 2 MPa, σy = 5 MPa and τxy = -1.5 MPa

(4) Compute strain components in x – y coordinate system from the measurement of

normal strains in three directions as follows:
εx = -1000 µ, ε45 = -500 µ and εy = 200 µ.
ε45 is normal strain along a line at an angle 45o from the x-axis.
