EXPERIMENT: THE SPECIFIC LATENT HEAT OF
VAPORIZATION OF WATER
LECTURER: MDM. LIEW YIT LIAN
EXPERIMENT 5: THE SPECIFIC LATENT HEAT OF VAPORIZATION OF
WATER
Objective:
 To determine the value of specific latent heat of vaporization of water.

Theory
The latent heat of vaporization, L, of a substance is the heat per unit mass
required to change the substance from a liquid to a vapour at its boiling
temperature.
Q
L
m or Q  mL
With Q is the quantity of heat, if the energy is to be conserved, we say that the
heat lost by the heater coil must equal the heat gained by the boiling water.

Heat lost  Heat gained

Pt  mL,

where P is the power of the electric kettle and t is the time in second.

Apparatus
 Electric kettle
 Stopwatch
 Cellulotape
 Lagging (cotton)
 Thermometer
 1000cm3 Graduated cylinder

Procedure
1. 1.5 litres of water is poured into the electric kettle by using a graduated
cylinder.
2. The kettle is lagged with cotton by using cellulotape.
3. The kettle was switch on.
4. The timing is started when the water started boiling by using a stopwatch.
5. The water was continued to boil for about 10 minutes.
6. The kettle was switch off and the timing was stop.
7. The lagging was removed and the water was allow to cool.
8. The water was poured into the graduated cylinder and the volume of the
remaining water was measured.
9. The mass of the remaining water was determined. (Assuming the density
of water to be 1.0 g cm-3.

Results
Initial volume of water = 4000 cm3
Final volume of remaining water = 3680 cm3
The mass of vaporized water = 0.32 kg
Boiling time = 493 s

Analysis
 Energy supplied by the kettle, Pt = 2400 J
 The specific latent heat of vaporization of water, L e = 3.70  10 J/kg.
6

 Theoretical value for the specific latent heat of = 2.26  106 J/kg.
vaporization of water

Discuss your finding in terms of error percentage and the main sources
which can affect your result.

Le  LT
%error   100
LT
 63.6%
 This error occur due to our calorimeter was not fully isolated. So, maybe
there is heat was lost during our experiment.

Conclusion

The specific latent heat of vaporization for water is 3.70  10 J kg-1.
