MOTIVATION LETTER

To,
The Program Co-ordinator
Hydraulics Engineering and River Basin Development
IHE Delft, Netherlands

Dear Sir/Madam
With this letter, I am applying for Masters in Hydraulics Engineering and River Basin Development
offered by your university for 2020 intake. This program provided by your university is a solid step
towards my future so as to develop myself as a professional hydraulics engineer. I am a highly
motivated young professional who perceives this degree to be beneficial for my future career in water
related projects and more specifically in hydropower sector of my home country.
In 2017, I earned bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (specialization in hydropower) from
Kathmandu University. During my bachelor’s level I learned different courses of engineering. The
key subjects I learned were mathematics, Basic and Advanced Surveying, GIS and Remote Sensing,
Structured Programming including C-programming and C++ programming, structure, hydraulics and
river engineering, Hydropower Engineering and many more. Though these all subjects had equal
importance, I was always interested in Hydraulics and Hydropower. I used to enjoy attending these
classes. I always secured good marks in hydraulics and hydropower. I chose hydrological analysis in
my internship and design of the S4 type settling basin (Serpent) and powerhouse structure analysis
during my project as a part of my course completion during my bachelor degree. Since then, I always
had a feeling that I need to do better in a field that I am interested in. I am confident that my
educational and practical background constitutes a good foundation for the Master’s program.
After my degree I was offered a job in a hydropower company named Hydro-Tunnelling and
Research Pvt.Ltd. where I was assigned as a hydropower engineer. Now I am currently working in
this company and I am designated for designing Headworks component such as weir, intake, gravel
trap, approach canal/culvert, settling basin and spillway of a project named Midim I Hydropower
project with an installed capacity of 16 MW along with drawings production. During my first year in
this company, I was involved in another project named Mai-Beni Hydropower project (9.5 MW)
where I designed the Settling Basin and this project is now at the last stage of its construction. The
knowledge and skills I gathered during my undergraduate level and internship is being used to its
fullest here. These opportunities provided me a medium to apply my theoretical knowledge to
practical implications and also triggered my interest in hydraulics. With my experience as a
hydropower engineer, I wish to enlarge my knowledge of hydraulics because I found hydraulics
engineering is very important for design of any water related project. With my experience obtained by
the projects that I had undertaken, activities that I had participated in and the enthusiasm that I have
got, I think I will be a valuable student.
As my interest and the course that is being provided by your university matches, I think your
university would be the best choice for me to broaden my knowledge in hydraulics and river
engineering and develop myself as a professional person. I believe to gain knowledge from your
university which I could utilise and share with the expertise in my country and serve as a good citizen
of my country when I return after my completion of the course. I am sure that if I were given a chance
to enrich my skill set with efficient guidance provided by IHE Delft, I would be a great help for my
country in water resource development.
Looking forward for your positive response.
Your Sincerely,
Sailaja Poudel
