1. Describe what do you mean by training and development?

Training and Development is one of the main functions of the human resource management
department. Training refers to a systematic setup where employees are instructed and taught
matters of technical knowledge related to their jobs. It focuses on teaching employees how to use
particular machines or how to do specific tasks to increase efficiency.

Whereas, Development refers to the overall holistic and educational growth and maturity of people
in managerial positions. The process of development is in relation to insights, attitudes, adaptability,
leadership and human relations. Training and development programmes are designed according to
the requirements of the organisation, the type and skills of employees being trained, the end goals
of the training and the job profile of the employees. These programmes are generally classified into
two types: (i) on the job programmes, and (ii)off the job programmes. Different training is given to
employees at different levels. The following training methods are used for the training of skilled
workers and operators - Specific job training programmes, Technical training at a training with live
demos, Internship training, Training via the process of rotation of job.

Training given to people in a supervisory or managerial capacity is – Lectures, Group Discussions,


Case studies, Role-playing, Conferences etc. People in managerial programmes are given this type of
training- Management Games to develop decision making, Programmes to identify potential
executives, Sensitivity training to understand and influence employee behaviour, Simulation and
role-playing, Programmes for improving communication, human relations and managerial skills.

2. Describe and explain about the training methods used in the company for
training their employees?

TATA GROUP has established various Development and Training to enhance the knowledge and
relationship quotient of its employee such as Tata Administrative Service (TAS) in 1956 and Tata
Management Training Centre (TMTC) was set up in Pune by Mr. JRD Tata in 1966.

The TAS is a 12-month intensive leadership training program for young recruits from two sources –
the in-house recruits selected from within the Tata group of companies and the campus selects from
the top business schools in India.

The aim of the TAS is two-fold – creating a pool of exclusive group of managers within the company
& providing a rich platform for these talents to realize their full potential. It continues to be one of
the exclusive corporate training programs in the country which aims at recruiting talented
candidates who are developed to become the future management leaders within the Tata fraternity.

The GOAL (Group Orientation and Learning) aspect of the TAS training enables the candidates to
gain management expertise across various Tata companies through three assignments in its
curriculum. A fourth assignment is aimed at training them in Corporate Sustainability in a rural
setting, in tune with what Tata claims to be their dedication towards the community.

The recruits, after training, are positioned in top management roles in the various companies within
the group with the possibility of transitions to other business segments, upon evaluation. Thus,
there is an opportunity to be posted across the various locations in India plus the possibility of
overseas experiences.
The Tata Management Training Centre (TMTC) was set up with the mission of creating and grooming
leaders for the future enabling the Tata Group of Companies to collaborate and participate on a
vibrant learning platform.

Offering around 250 programmes a year, conducted by in-house senior faculty from academics and
business, supported by experts from the best of Indian and international B schools. TMTC started its
e-learning programs in 2009. Every year, more than 4,000 Tata Managers and Leaders go through
the training programs.

Leadership development programmes include:

 Tata Group Strategic Leadership seminar.


 Tata Group Executive Leadership seminar.
 Tata Group e-Merging Leaders seminar.

E-learning programmes include:

 Live e-classroom.
 Live video broadcast and,
 Self-paced e-learning programmes.

A Unique self-paced programme is conducted named ' TATA - Harvard Manage Mentor self-paced e-
learning program' by Harvard Manage Mentor, in association with Harvard Business School
Publishing, providing 44 different programmes for Tata employees.
TMTC objectives include:

 Improvement of organisational performance through dissemination of the latest


knowledge and skills among practicing managers.
 Facilitation of attitudinal and behavioural changes.
 Facilitation of solutions for organisational issues.
 Development of learning organisations.
 Training methodology.

Its practice areas include:

 Finance, Ethics.
