System benefits with Fireboard
In addition to its use in new building projects, Fireboard is also a real problem
solver in renovation and remodelling. As a direct lining underneath wood
joist ceilings, for example, 90 minute fire resistance can be achieved using
just a 25 mm ceiling configuration (system D150.de). The weight and the
low constructional height is often decisive particularly when remodelling.
Fireboard offers a diverse range of ceiling solutions here.
Existing metal stud partitions can be easily and cost-effectively upgraded
with Fireboard. Depending on the constructional situation upgrading is
performed on both sides or just one side. Even walls with timber framing can
be upgraded (system K241.de).
We offer solutions both with and without metal grids for steel beam
encasement with Fireboard (system K252.de). However, a metal grid is
always required for standards-based solutions.
A diverse range of fire resistance related requirements are covered by the
proofs for the Certificates of Usability. Furthermore, the needs of practice will
always have a demand for special solutions and customized designs. We
cover these engineering fire protection measures with Fireboard.
Fireboard systems are the optimum solution wherever reaction to fire
A1 (non-combustible without combustible components) is demanded in
buildings.

Properties and added value

■■ Best coherence of structure when exposed to fire
■■ Non-combustible
■■ Low weight
■■ Easy application
■■ Low expansion and shrinkage when climate conditions change
■■ Arc resistant

Ceiling bulkhead
In principle, ceiling bulkheads in the
intermediate ceiling area (suspended
ceiling / basic ceiling) correspond
to the configuration of lightweight
partitions with the fire resistance
classes specified there.
The application is undertaken in
accordance with the system data
sheet Knauf board ceilings D11.de.

Access panel
The fire resistance of the tested Knauf
ceiling system is retained even after
an access panel has been installed.
The application is undertaken in
accordance with the product data
sheets of Knauf access panels.

Fire-protected encasement for built-in lighting

The installation of built-in lighting is
permissible if it can be guaranteed
that the opening in the ceiling can be
covered by an equivalent fire resistant
box encasement, i.e. ensuring that the
cladding and insulation required for
the ceiling may also be used for the
encasement.
Additional suspenders may be needed
depending on the type and weight of
the lamps.
The application is undertaken in
accordance with the system data
sheet Knauf board ceilings D11.de.

Steel beams and steel columns with encasement made of Fireboard

Encasement made of Fireboard can be applied without a grid by using front side and surface stapling of the Fireboard or can be established on a metal grid
with drywall screws.
Application without grid
Application without grid is economically more beneficial and enables leaner constructions. They are suitable for beam types IPE, HEA, HEB and HEM as well
as for steel columns of all profile shapes up to a maximum web height of 600 mm.
Application with metal grid in two variants
Metal grid with column clip
■■ Web height with beams and columns up to 600 mm
Frame metal grid
■■ Web height with beams up to 1000 mm

Note Individual application details can be found in the Knauf system data sheet Knauf Column and Beam Encasements K25.de.

Individual special solutions with engineering fire
protection measures
In practise it is frequently the case that additional cladding is required for the
existing building elements or before existing equipment, containers or similar
requiring a fire resistance of 30 to 180 minutes. The fire exposure in these
cases is assumed to be only from one side.
In order to provide assistance with the fire resistant design of such special
application cases (intended particularly for the fire safety experts and
officials), Fireboard in thickness from 20 to 65 mm (including multi-layer) as
simplified wall and ceiling constructions were subjected to a fire resistance

Notes on fire resistance

The specifications marked with offer additional application options,
which are not directly included in the Certificate of Usability. On the basis
of our technical assessments, we assume that these marked design
solutions can be assessed as a non-significant divergence. We can make
the documentation on which this assessment is based, such as surveyors'
reports or technical assessments, available to you together with the
Certificate of Usability on request. We recommend that a non-significant
divergence be coordinated and authorised in advance in consultation
between the persons responsible for fire resistance and/or the relevant
authorities.
The stated constructional and structural properties, and characteristic
building physics of Knauf systems can solely be ensured with the exclusive
use of Knauf system components, or other products expressly recommended
by Knauf. The validity and up-to-datedness of the stated proofs have to be
considered.
Certificate of Usability
Information on the certificates of usability can be found in the system data
sheets for the corresponding Knauf systems.
