I h a v e f o l l o w e d Dr. B r a u d e ' s (1979) a n d D r . S t a n f o r d ' s (1979) d i s c u s -

s i o n o f c y b e r n e t i c c o n t r o l models o f p s i w i t h g r e a t i n t e r e s t . While I

applaud D r . s t a n f o r d ' s e f f o r t s t o encourage t h e o r i z i n g o u t s i d e t h e cybernetic

m o d e l , I am i n a g r e e m e n t w i t h D r . B r a u d e i n n o t b e l i e v i n g t h a t t h e e v i d e n c e

is s t r o n g f o r r e j e c t i o n o f c y b e r n e t i c m o d e l i n g . I would l i k e t o b r o a c h

two o t h e r l i n e s o f t h o u g h t a s t o why t h e r e d o e s n o t seem t o be a n o b v i o u s

r e l a t i o n s h i p between a p p a r e n t c o m p l e x i t y o f PK t a s k a n d l e v e l o f r e s u l t s ,

o n e o f t h e m o s t c e n t r a l a s p e c t s o f B r a u d e ' s a n d ~ t a n f o r d l sd i s c u s s i o n .

W h i l e w e would c e r t a i n l y e x p e c t d e c r e m e n t s i n p e r f o r m a n c e when t h e com-

p l e x i t y o f a PK t a s k b e g i n s t o r e a c h o r e x c e e d t h e c u r r e n t l i m i t s o f a p e r -

s o n ' s PK c a p a c i t y , I would a r g u e t h a t we may n o t have c o l l e c t e d a n y d a t a

a b o u t t h i s e n d o f t h e PK c a p a c i t y c u r v e a t a l l . I n a r e c e n t l y published

t h e o r y on t h e n a t u r e o f t h e mind-body r e l a t i o n s h i p , ~ m e r g e n tI n t e r a c t i o n i s m

(Tart, 1979), I h a v e p o s t u l a t e d t h a t mind a n d body a r e two q u a l i t a t i v e l y

from ongoing "normaltt PK a c t i v i t y .and b y v i r t u e o f b e i n g s o s i m p l e may b e

hard t o do, r a t h e r l i k e a s k i n g a n e x c e p t i o n a l l y s k i l l e d c o n c e r t p i a n i s t ,

w h i l e h e o r s h e i s i n c o n c e r t , t o see i f he c a n a c t i v a t e a s i n g l e m o t o r

neuron i n h i s hand. It can be done, w i t h biofeedback t r a i n i n g techniques,

b u t i t i s hard t o go from what seems t o u s "easy" a n d " n a t u r a l " c o n t r o l

need t o g e t more s p e c i f i c and d e v i s e : e m p i r i c a l l y t e s t a b l e ' p r e d i c t i o n s . The

o n l y PK-relevant p r e d i c t i o n I have made s o f a r from t h i s Emergent I n t e r a c -

t i o n i s t a p p r o a c h i s t h a t more complex, more " b r a i n l i k e " PK t e s t d e v i c e s

s h o u l d b e e a s i e r t o i n f l u e n c e t h a n s i m p l e m e c h a n i c a l d e v i c e s , b u t s u c h de-

v i c e s (which would b e o r d e r s o f m a g n i t u d e more complex t h a n c u r r e n t PK t e s t

d e v i c e s ) have y e t t o be b u i l t . I am c o n f i d e n t t h a t s p e c i f i c i t y c a n b e a d d e d

t o t h i s k i n d o f a p p r o a c h a s w e work on i t , b u t i t i s n o t n e c e s s a r y i n t h e

very e a r l y s t a r e s o f learning about psi.

I would a l s o a r g u e t h a t a l m o s t a l l l a b o r a t o r y PK d a t a c a n p r o f i t a b l y

be v i e w e d a s s a m p l e s f r o m t h e v e r y e a r l i e s t s t a g e s o f a p o t e n t i a l l e a r n i n g

o f improved PK p e r f o r m a n c e . The a r g u m e n t s I have made e l s e w h e r e ( T a r t , 1966;

- , 1976; 1 9 7 7 ) t h a t ESP s h o u l d b e l e a r n a b l e i n t a l e n t e d , m o t i v a t e d p e r c i p i e n t s

u n d e r c o n d i t i o n s o f i m m e d i a t e f e e d b a c k s h o u l d a l s o a p p l y t o PK. Although

f a s t ' o r i m m e d i a t e f e e d b a c k h a s b e e n common i n PK s t u d i e s , i t s h o u l d b e n o t e d

t h a t t h e g e n e r a l l e v e l o f PK b r o u g h t t o t h e t a s k i s g e n e r a l l y m i n i s c u l e .
