Superior Finite Element Analysis Solutions
Our Company
ABAQUS, Inc., is the leading developer of advanced software for finite element analysis.
ABAQUS was founded in 1978 by David Hibbitt, Bengt Karlsson, and Paul Sorensen.
From the first, the company has committed itself to developing superior technology
backed up by talented local support teams. Dedication to helping customers meet
engineering and business objectives sets ABAQUS apart and accounts for our
consistent growth over the years. We now employ over 350 people at more than 30
offices and representative locations worldwide. Because ABAQUS is privately held,
debt free, and financially solid, we have been able to keep a long-term perspective on
technology and business development and to concentrate on our customers and our
products. The founders remain active in analysis technology and provide guidance to
our executive management team as members of the ABAQUS board of directors.
ABAQUS was initially developed for the nuclear power and offshore engineering
communities, who needed a tool for studying complex, nonlinear engineering problems.
Widespread adoption across many industries during the 1980s and 1990s established
ABAQUS as the software of choice for the most demanding analyses. Early expertise
with highly technical challenges formed the basis for the maturity that today makes our
software the leader in nonlinear finite element analysis.
Since its inception, ABAQUS has been built on an architecture that supports a
general nonlinear approach to structural mechanics. This means that the sophisticated
capabilities needed to perform real-world simulations are the bedrock of ABAQUS
technology. This advanced technology enables users to model the most complex
phenomena and to consider even the most subtle effects. With a strong emphasis
on high-performance computing, ABAQUS effectively solves the largest and most
computer-intensive problems today. With its unique combination of implicit and
explicit technologies, plus the ability to perform integrated multibody dynamics,
ABAQUS offers a compelling alternative to implementations involving multiple
products and vendors.
ABAQUS offers the most powerful and complete solution for simple to complex linear
and nonlinear engineering problems, using the finite element method. A wide range of
structural, thermal, and coupled analyses is supported. As organizations move toward
real-world simulation, ABAQUS technology is uniquely positioned to help make this
goal a reality.
ABAQUS developers are responsible for many notable contributions to the field of
finite element analysis. In 1996 we introduced the first tetrahedral element suitable for
modeling complex nonlinear phenomena, such as contact with friction and material
yielding. That same year we developed the first robust technique for automated bolt
loading. In 1997 we pioneered breakthrough technology for powertrain applications,
enabling engineers for the first time to accurately model and optimize gasket sealing.
ABAQUS innovations in recent years have included new contact algorithms,
sophisticated material models, easy-to-use spot welds and other connection
technologies, cylindrical elements, and underwater shock analysis, to name a few.
CEO Mark Goldstein leads our executive management team, which together has over
75 years of experience in engineering and software development for finite element
analysis. From applications engineers to developers and executives, technical breadth
and accomplishment characterize the entire staff of ABAQUS. Our collective knowledge
is the deepest resource available for organizations that set challenging engineering and
business goals.
ABAQUS provides nonlinear finite element analysis software to BCA. ABAQUS has
been in use at Boeing for more than 15 years.
Corus
Corus, the international metals group formed from the merger between
British Steel and Koninklijke Hoogovens, makes and supplies metal products
and innovative solutions for a broad range of market sectors. The company
produced around 18 million tons of steel in 2001, which represented
approximately 11% of total EU production and positioned the company
as Europe's fourth largest steel producer.
Motorola
First introduced in 1994, Motorola's iDEN® (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network)
technology brought to the market next generation wireless solutions designed for a variety of
vertical market mobile business applications. Today, iDEN wireless handsets are utilized in a
variety of work environments ranging from manufacturing floors to executive conference rooms as
well as mobile sales forces.
Motorola engineers involved with developing iDEN wireless handsets have published several
technical papers on their use of ABAQUS. Some specific points discussed in the papers include:
• ABAQUS is the primary solution at Motorola iDEN for drop testing simulation
• The modified second-order tetrahedral element is a reasonable alternative to the traditional
shell or hex mesh approach
• The tetrahedral element also provides a more efficient modeling approach for impact analyses

Honda
One of the world's fuel efficiency leaders, the gasoline-electric Honda Insight hybrid
has received many awards, including "Best Integration/Use of New Technology" in its
class at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum. The Insight at this competition featured the
new continuously variable transmission (CVT) and offers a 57/56 mpg city/highway
EPA fuel-economy rating.
Engineers at Honda's Tochigi R&D Center use ABAQUS software as a key enabler in
the development of continously variable transmissions. ABAQUS is used to accurately
predict dynamic behavior and stresses, which are then used to estimate V-belt
durability for various CVT configurations. In collaboration with ABAQUS support and
development teams, Honda also developed process automation tools using
ABAQUS/CAE. These tools enable design engineers to conduct studies of new design scenarios without having to learn the
advanced mechanics and process automation that power the application.
• Evaluation of dynamic behavior and ring stress to estimate durability of V-belts for CVTs
• New simulation method that for the first time includes the pulley flexural stiffness
• Clarification of contact between the ring edge and pulley surface due to misalignment
• Custom application using ABAQUS/CAE enables studies by design engineers
At recent technical conferences, engineers from NDC described how ABAQUS has played an important role in
evaluating the design and performance of various Nitinol medical devices. Some of the ABAQUS successes noted include:
ABAQUS quality assurance is also compliant with the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME) Nuclear Quality Assurance standard (NQA-1). The Committee on
Nuclear Quality Assurance is responsible for developing, managing, and/or coordinating
quality assurance-related codes and standards applications for siting, design,
construction, operation, and decommissioning of Nuclear Facilities. ASME NQA-1
covers the Quality Assurance Requirements for Nuclear Facility Applications.
Our dedicated Quality Monitoring Service Program is available on an annual fee basis.
It provides ABAQUS customers with a controlled copy of our corporate Quality
Assurance Plan and a copy of our annual quality assurance audit. Our customers
receive definitive, proactive notification of potential quality problems and have the
option to audit our corporate quality assurance systems.
These alliances allow us to optimize the delivery of ABAQUS software and support to
widely varying industry needs. For example, in aerospace and ground vehicles, our
alliances with Altair, Dassault Systemes, and LMS enable us to deliver ABAQUS for use
throughout the product development cycle. The MEMS segment in electronics requires
in-depth process and segment-specific knowhow, and our relationships with Corning
Intellisense and Coventor help us deliver ABAQUS in an environment optimized for
users in this industry.
- Robert Geisler, Engineering Group Manager at General Motors North American Product Group
"Boeing uses both CATIA and ABAQUS as essential design, analysis, and
simulation tools. We are pleased with the directions of the planned initiative
between Dassault Systemes and ABAQUS, Inc., and we look forward to
helping refine the end-user requirements of the integrated system within the
CATIA V5 infrastructure."
We know our success is based on how well we adhere to our core competency.
Our company is dedicated to serving the technology needs of finite element
analysts and to supporting the roles analysts play in the engineering process.
We are singularly focused on finite element analysis and how it relates to the larger
context of organizational and process requirements.
Our goal is to make ABAQUS the only finite element software you'll ever need.
