Concepts of The Internet
Internet
The internet is a public, global (wide area) network based on TCP/IP protocols. The TCP/IP
protocol assigns every connected computer a unique Internet address also know as IP address,
so that they can locate each other on the network and locate data.
Intranet
A private computer network design to meet the needs of a single organization or company that is
based on TCP/IP.
Extranet
A intranet or a part of an intranet that have been selectively opened to strategic allies (such as
customers, suppliers, research associates) to remotely access and/or edit information. For
example on-line banking application.
Internet Concepts/Protocols
Protocol
An agreed set of rules that specifies the format of data as well as the rules to be followed to
transmit it
TCP
Transmission control protocol.
IP
Internet protocol.
HTTP
Hyper Teaxt Transfer Protocol. A protocol used to request and transmit files, especially web
pages and web page components, over the Internet or other computer networks.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol. A protocol used to transfer files between FTP servers and clients
VoIP
Voice over IP. Is the use of Internet based technologies to transmit voice-grade data over the
internet.
