DAY 1
I. Introduction

What is a seed? What is it capable of becoming? (Answer this)

We can see that from that small seed came out a very big tree. How does it contain a big giant tree? That’s what
mystery is all about. It is unfolding. The truth of the church is gradually revealing herself to all of us.

We find plenty of signs and symbols in the Church. The sacraments are efficacious visible signs of God’s grace.
A candle is not only an object used to give light, but it also symbolizes our expression of our devotional prayer,
and more importantly, a reminder that Christ is the light of the world. We make us of signs and symbols
because our faith is shrouded in MYSTERY. The mysteries of faith are truths that goes beyond human
comprehension. Nevertheless, we believe and accept them because they are revealed by God.

In this discussion on the Church as a mystery leads us to recall its divine origin. Why the church was part of
God’s eternal plan is a mystery. Given this, we should approach its nature with faith. The mystery of God
envelops the Church. We can grasp this mystery when we try to understand the meaning and role of the Church
in the light of the mystery of Jesus Christ. It is for this reason that the Vatican II’s Dogmatic constitution on the
Church begins by stressing the LIGHT OF CHRIST THAT SHINES OUT VISIBLE FROM THE CHURCH.
(LG 1)
II. Motivation
1. Why do we keep secrets?
1
2. How do you feel when a friend discloses a secret to you?
3. Why is it important to be trustworthy in keeping others’ secret?

III. Discussion

What is a mystery? It is anything that is kept secret or remains unexplained or unknown. Life itself is a mystery
because mere reason is incapable of totally understanding its entirety. A mystert also refers to a religious truth
that our human nature will not fully understand through divine revelation.

Given that the church is a mystery, we would only know about her through God.

III. Reflection Making

 Why is there a Church in our society? Do we really need the church in our life and in our society?
 What do you understand about the purpose of establishing the Church in our life and in our society?

DAY 2
I. Introduction
Because the Church is more than just a human institution, she has no absolute definition. As we have seen in the
previous lessons, the Bible alludes to many different images of the Church like the sheepfold or cultivated field,
house of god, and spouse of Christ. The Second Vatican Council made use of beautiful expressions to portray
the Church, such as the People of God, Body of Christ, and Temple of the Holy Spirit. We need faith to
understand the Church.
II. Motivation
 Identify any thing inside the church that you could not understand or grasp.
 Ask yourself, why is it?
III. Discussion
“The Church is both visible and spiritual, a hierarchical society and the Mystical Body of Christ. She is one, yet
formed of two components, human and divine. That is her mystery, which only faith can accept.” (CCC 779)
To consider the Church as a mystery is to say that the invisible and almighty God is working through this
institution so that our sanctification and salvation would be realized. It is, indeed, both wonderful and
incomprehensible that God had established the Church to continue the saving work of Jesus Christ by the power
of the Holy Spirit.
According to the Catechism for Filipino Catholics, the Church is a mystery because of her relationship with the
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit which she makes manifest by her nature and mission.
 By her origin, the Church proceeded from the saving plan of the Father, the redemptive mission of
the Son, and the sanctifying work of the Spirit.
 In her structure, just as the Trinity is a community, so is the Church, a communion of believers drawn
together by Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit
 Its mystery may be known by her mission which originates from the mission of the Son and the
mission of the Holy Spirit, in accordance with the decree of God the Father.
 By her destiny, the full realization of this communion in the Kingdom of God would be realized (CFC
1364)
Above all else, the Church is the mystery of the Trinitarian communion of life and love. We have to live our
lives in such a way that we truly become a community of life and love. As God’s people, it is our mission to
make Christ’s light shine forth in the world through us.

III. Reflection
 How do you show that you live your life as part of a community of life and love (i.e. as part of your
Church)? Give concrete examples.

busy or anything). Take a picture of your altar and post it in our FB Group Page.
