3. INSTRUCTOR SIMULATOR CONTROL FACILITIES

The DrillSIM-20 simulator offers instructor control facilities that exist across the complete DrillSIM simulator family. The facilities provided are
extensive, providing the instructor with powerful tools to configure, monitor and control simulation exercises. The examples provided in this
chapter are limited to the more common instructor operations necessary to conduct a simulation training exercise.
The main instructor control is performed through a dedicated programme running on the Instructor Laptop PC. Following simulator start-up the
main banner page is displayed. It is divided into three main sections as shown below:

3.3INITIAL CONDITIONS (SNAPSHOT)

SELECTION

Initial Conditions Sets, or ‘SNAPSHOTS’ effectively act

as exercise start points whereby equipment
parameters representing the status of the well and
surface process equipment at a particular instant in
time are stored. The simulator is supplied with a
number of baseline snapshots enabling simulation
training to be conducted immediately following power
up. From this baseline configuration a complete library
of initial condition sets can be generated by the
simulator user.

The snapshot SAVE facility enables any exercise

condition to be saved for future use. It effectively
saves to a disk file the status of all well and process
equipment at a moment in time.
Note: The Snapshot SAVE command can only be
executed while the simulator in in ‘FREEZE’ mode.

11. HARDWARE FUNCTION DIAGNOSTICS TESTING

The purpose of the hardware diagnostics tests is to confirm the functional operation of all electrical and electronic hardware and control
instrumentation. The facilities described may be used to assist in diagnosing suspected hardware failures.
Note 1: There are four categories of electronic communication signals between the simulator consoles and the simulation computer systems:
1) Digital Inputs: These represent the status of switches and digital levers on simulator consoles.
2) Digital Outputs: These set the status of illuminating lamps on the simulator consoles.
3) Analogue Inputs: These represent the position of variable controls such as pump speed regulator.
4) Analogue Outputs: These set the displayed values of panel gauges and digital meters.
Note 2: The following procedures detail a full system test.
