VIDEO ACTIVITY 2

Dear students

This activity wants you to present the appropriate pronunciation of vocabulary, accurate
grammar and speaking using the contents of unit 3 of the A2 Elementary student´s book by
making your own YouTube video.

Please read the instructions carefully before you do this task in order to do a good job, and
thus to contribute to your own learning objectives and satisfaction.

For this, you need the following:

DIRECTIONS UNIT 3

STEP 1 – GRAMMAR (THIRD PERSON SINGULAR)

 In this video activity you are going to explain all the spelling rules of the third
person singular forms of the verbs in the Simple Present Tense. That is, when the
subject of a sentence is he, she, it, we add –s or –es to the verb that follows these
subjects.
 As a reference you can go to page 28, Grammar Panel (Present Simple: 3 RD Person
Singular), and page 142, Exercise 3.2 (Grammar Reference).

STEP 2 – FLASHCARDS

 Make flashcards with each spelling rule with, either, your own charts or images
from Google, as seen in the example below. Be creative.

STEP 3 – PRONUNCIATION STAGE

 Because this activity needs you to be well prepared to pronounce the information in
the flashcards, you have to practice before you create your video.
 To practice the pronunciation, you only have to pronounce the verbs in the infinitive
form, for example: live, work, eat, etc.
 You don’t need to pronounce the verbs in the third person singular form yet, for
example: lives, works, eats, etc.
 Use internet resources to know how to say each infinitive verb accurately. Play the
audio and repeat as many times as you need in order to learn the correct
pronunciation of these words. Pay attention to the stress.

IN THE VIDEO

 When you make the video, you should present your flashcards in the following way:

1) Make a simple introduction on the topic.

For example:

Hello, my name´s _____, and welcome to my video activity 2. This is about

(the spelling rules and pronunciation of the 3RD person singular form).

2) Try to give an explanation on each rule, and examples as clear as possible.

3) Use and highlight the infinitive verbs when you explain the rules.

STEP 4 – FINAL – S SOUNDS – THIRD PERSON & PLURAL ENDINGS

 When we add –s or –es to a verb, in a sentence in the Simple Present Tense, it is

very important to know how to pronounce the –s or –es.
 Then, after you have completed the exposition of the spelling rules, you are also
going to explain the three different sounds (1. /IZ/ - 2. /S/ and 3. /Z/) how we can
pronounce the third person singular forms of the verbs in the Simple Present Tense.
Teacher: Milton Herrera English I – II Semester: May – August 2020

 For each sound, there are rules or guidelines that help us to know the correct
pronunciation of the –s or –es.

STEP 5 – FLASHCARDS

 Make flashcards with the rules that can describe the correct pronunciation of each
sound (1. /IZ/ - 2. /S/ and 3. /Z/) with, either, your own charts or images from
Google, as seen in the example below. Be creative.

SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

PRONUNICATION OF THE THIRD PERSON SINGULAR
RULE: If the infinitive verb ends in the following combinations and letters:
“-ch; -sh; -ge; -ss; -ce; -ze; -se; -x; -z”, you pronounce the ending /IZ/ (extra
syllable) in the third person singular form.

In the examples below, the –s and –es, in all these verbs have the same
pronunciation in the third person singular form.

ENDING INFINITIVE VERB PRONUNCIATION – 3RD PERSON SINGULAR

- CH CATCH CATCHES
- SH WISH WISHES
- GE CHANGE CHANGES
- SS EXPRESS EXPRESSES /IZ/
- CE PRONOUNCE PRONOUNCES
- SE CLOSE CLOSES EXTRA

STEP 6 – PRONUNCIATION STAGE

 Because this activity needs you to be well prepared to pronounce the information in
the flashcards, you have to practice before you create your video.
 To practice the pronunciation, you have to pronounce the verbs in the infinitive
form, for example: catch, wish, change, etc. And
 After that, you need to pronounce the verbs in the third person singular form, for
example: catches, wishes, changes, etc. with the correct final –s sound.
 When you pronounce the final (1. /IZ/ - 2. /S/ and 3. /Z/) sounds, you should say
them all loudly and clearly.

STEP 7 – GRAMMAR & VOCABULARY UNIT 3

(PRESENT SIMPLE: 3RD PERSON SINGULAR HE, SHE, and IT)

 Go to: Page 26 – Exercise 1a.

Page 27 – Exercise 4a.

Page 29 – (Vocabulary: Activities) Exercise 1 and (Speaking) Exercise 1.

And page 31 – (Grammar Panel: Like, Love, Hate + -ING) Exercise 2b.

 On these pages you have different vocabulary lists. From these lists, choose the
verbs and phrases that will be part of your sentences for the next steps.

STEP 9 – FLASHCARDS

 Choose 12 different activities from among the vocabulary lists. When you choose
your pictures, they should illustrate a particular and logical order.
 After that, make six flashcards with the pictures of the activities that the vocabulary
lists describe with, either, your own drawings or images from Google.
 In each flashcard, include two pictures, from the vocabulary lists, and two
sentences. The sentences should talk about your family or friends’ activities/feelings
using the information of the two pictures.
 In addition, your sentences have to have: 1) the time when they do these activities
and 2) how often they do each activity. To do this, use “Frequency Adverbs” and
“Expressions with once and every” – (page 27 – Exercise 5).
 Finally, in your sentences, highlight the final (1. /IZ/ - 2. /S/ and 3. /Z/) sounds of
the verbs in the third person singular form, as seen in the example below. Be
creative.
Teacher: Milton Herrera English I – II Semester: May – August 2020

My brother, Miguel, gets /S/ up early every day, and he always goes /Z/ for a walk.

 Remember that the subjects in your sentences only have to be the subject pronouns
(He, She) and singular subjects (My brother, my cousin, Esther, etc.).

STEP 4 – PRONUNCIATION STAGE

 Because this activity needs you to be well prepared to pronounce the information in
the flashcards, you have to practice before you create your video.
 To practice the pronunciation, you can use internet resources in particular to learn
how to pronounce the words you have problems in English. Listen and repeat as
many times as you need in order to learn the correct pronunciation of these phrases.
Pay attention to the stress.
 Do the same for the sentences, practice them, and put emphasis on the
pronunciation of the verbs in the third person singular.

IN THE VIDEO

 When you make the video, you should present your flashcards in the following way:

1) Make a simple introduction on the topic.

For example: Now, these are some examples of third person singular
sentences and pronunciation.

2) Next, you first pronounce the activities/feelings in the pictures as clear as

possible.

For example: Get up, and Go for a walk

3) After that, say the sentences, and put emphasis on the pronunciation of the verbs
in the third person singular.

4) When you have finished all your video work, say goodbye to everyone.

5) Please, don’t read the sentences. Memorise the sentences because you need to
speak in front of the video camera, and this will help you to have a good video
presentation.
Teacher: Milton Herrera English I – II Semester: May – August 2020

VIDEO GUIDELINES

 Remember that this is only one video that you have to submit. The video has two
parts. Part 1 is for presenting the “Spelling rules and Pronunciation of the 3 RD
Person Singular” and part 2 is for presenting “people’s activities/feelings”.
 Your video should be not more than 5 minute length.
 An important requirement is to introduce each flashcard as seen below.

 When your video is ready upload it onto YouTube.

 Finally, go to the Section “Forums”, then “First Period”, and click on “Video
Activity 2”. Copy and paste the YouTube video link in this forum section only.
If you do it in a different section, it will not be graded.
 Allow me to remind you that you will have to post the video link once only. This
means that if you post it more than once, it will not be accepted.

IMPORTANT HIGHLIGHTS

 It is recommended that you record your video in a quiet place in order to avoid
external noise in order to make sure that your voice is going to be heard clearly and
loudly.
 Please DO NOT use background music in your video. The only image that your
video should have is you in front of the video camera because what is important is
to watch you and hear you speaking.
 Make sure your camera is steady and your recording is clear.
 Open up your video and watch it to see how well it turned out. If you find that you
have to correct anything, you can make it again before posting. Check the sound
quality.
Teacher: Milton Herrera English I – II Semester: May – August 2020

The time to fulfill this activity will be from Tuesday, June 02nd to Tuesday, June 09th
until 23:59.

ASSESSMENT

 Your task will be assessed according to the guides that you have in the instructions
of this document and your performance in your video presentation.
