High performance concrete (HPC)

High performance Concrete is designed to be more durable and stronger

than conventional concrete it consists of the same components and
mixtures of traditional concrete, but in different proportions it gives it
advantages that make it stronger and carry the requirements of structural
and environmental. HPC is used in bridge deck overlays, highway
structures, port and harbor structures, water and sewage structures and
pipes, radioactive waste containment structures, industrial floors, runways,
parking structures, and chemical storage tanks.
Since ancient time, mankind has been searching for construction materials
with higher and higher performance so they can build taller, longer and
better structures. They probably started with mud, straw and wood
because they were handily available.
History shows that there is an interrelationship between a new material
and the form of structures it is used for. Early arches were built with stones.
Steel enabled trusses and long span girders. High performance concrete,
with its extremely high strength and durability, is basically a new material,
even though it is called concrete. Its application should not be the path of
regular concrete.

HPC has gained popularity among the architects and engineers in these
days in the construction of multistory buildings, roads, bridges, airports,
nuclear power plants and in the construction of dams. For this
constructions HPC is essential and hence because HPS has a Properties like
resistance against frost, chloride attack, impermeability and thermal
cracking. The traditional concrete which has compressive strength of 40
MPa and less is not suitable for construction of high-rise buildings. In such
circumstances, high performance concrete is more suitable. Also This type
of concrete gains strength early and faster than conventional concrete.
Why HPC? HPC Easier to placement and consolidation without affecting its
strength, the size of the structure members decreases as the columns and
beams because the section is smaller and able to carry heavy loads and
weights, Earthquake resistant more than traditional concrete, high abrasion
resistance, Low creep and shrinkage. Better stiffness because of a higher
modulus. The use of high performance concrete would result in smaller loss
pre-stress and consequently larger permissible stress and smaller cross-
section being achieved, i.e. it would enable the standard pre-stressed
concrete girders to span longer distances or to carry heavier loads. In
addition, enhanced durability allow extended service life of the structure.

HPC have limited disadvantages like extended quality control, cost

Special constituents.
Here is an application for HPC called Hydropower Structures HPC Showing
high performance in handling high velocities of water and huge quantities
of silt is enhanced. The use of High Performance concrete has perform to
lesser repairs, and increased durability, on the other hand.
