Forms as an alteration product of biotite or phlogopite, by weathering or
hydrothermal action. Vermiculite is mined as a natural insulation material.
The best exfoliation properties were observed not for pure vermiculite, but for
intergrowths of vermiculite and other layer silicates (e.g. hydrobiotite).
Naturally expanded vermiculite can occur in volcanic rocks.
