Q1 (A) The attenuation of a signal is -10 dB. What is the final signal power if it was
originally 5 W?
(B) Write the name of the 3rd layer of the OSI reference model and write its tasks ? [25]
Q2 (A) For the bit stream 1100110, sketch the waveforms for each of the following
codes: (1) NRZ-L. Assume, the signal level of preceding bit is positive voltage. (2)
Multilevel Bipolar AMI - Assume, the most recent bit 1 is represented by negative
voltage. (3) Manchester. (4)Differential Manchester - Assume, the signal level of
preceding bit is negative voltage.
(B) What are the similarities and difference between bus and tree topologies? [25]
Q3 (A) We need to use synchronous TDM and combine 20 digital sources, each of
100 Kbps. Each output slot carries 1 bit from each digital sources, but one extra bit is
added to each frame for synchronization. Answer the following questions:
1. What is the size of an output frame in bits?
2. What is the output frame rate?
3. What is the duration of an output frame?
4. What is the output data rate?

(B) Compare twisted pair, co-axia and opical fiber? [25]

Q4 (A) Four data channels (digital), each transmitting at 2 Mbps, use a satellite
channel of 2 MHz. Design an appropriate configuration, using FDM?

(B) Briefly define the “connection-oriented service” and the “connectionless

service”; write their services and gives an examples? [25]
