Self-Learning Module for Grade 11

SCIENCE
EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE

Directions for the User

Here are some reminders to guide as you go through this module:
1. Read and follow each directions carefully;
2. Answer the pre-test before proceeding to the activity;
3. Take down notes and record points for clarification;
4. Always aim to get at least 80% of the total number of items given;
5. Be sure to answer the post test at the end of the module.

Introduction
All organism contain hereditary materials known as deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA. It is
contained in all cells of an organism with almost similar in components. Eukaryotic cell’s DNA is
housed in the nucleus of the cell and some are in the mitochondria while in prokaryotic cell’s
DNA is contain in the loop like structure called nucleoid. The main role of DNA is for inheritance,
coding for proteins and the genetic instruction guide for life structure and functions. DNA holds
the instructions for an organism's or each cell's development and reproduction and ultimately
death.

Competency: 4. explain how the information in the DNA allows the transfer of genetic
information and synthesis of proteins
S11/12LT -IIej-16

Objectives:
1. name the parts of the DNA nucleotide
2. identify the complementary nitrogenous bases of the nucleotide

Procedure/ Learning Experience

A. Engage
Students are asked to answer activity 1
Activity 1
Students are asked to draw a ladder in horizontal alignment in the
box. They are asked to colour the ladder as to distinguish one part to another.

Guide questions:
1. What are the parts of the ladder?
2. If you are to compare it to a DNA what would it be?

B. Explore

Activity 2 Colour me!

Students are asked to follow the instruction in colouring the drawing.

Activity 3 Match me!

Students are asked to name the parts of the nucleotide numbered above.

1. ETAHPSOHP = ______________________
2. TPEENOS RAGUS = __________________
3. SNIUTORNEGO SESAB = _____________

C. Explain
Activity 4 Complete me.
From the answer in activity 3, complete the statements that best describe
the parts of the nucleotide.
NUCLEIC ACID; PHOSPHATE; BUILDING; NUCLEIC ACID

1. ETAHPSOHP = A molecule containing one atom of

________________ ________ covalently bound to four oxygen
residues, two of which may be expressed
as a hydroxyl group
2. TPEENOS RAGUS = Sugars found in _________ and has five
carbon atoms
________________
3. SNIUTORNEGO SESAB = Used in the construction of _________,
which in turn build up nucleic acids
___________________ like DNA and RNA. The bases come in two
categories: pyrimidine and purines.
4. NEUDCILEOT= The basic structural unit and ________
____________________ block for.  DNA
