Cold Formed Light Gage Steel Structures
2. Any revealing of identification, appeal to evaluator and /or equations written eg, 42+8 = 50, will be treated as malpractice.

Time: 3 hrs. Max. Marks:100

Note: 1. Answer any FIVE full questions.

2. Draw neat sketches wherever necessary.

1 a. Write a brief history of cold formed light gage steel structures. (06 Marks)
Important Note : 1. On completing your answers, compulsorily draw diagonal cross lines on the remaining blank pages.

b. Explain the theory on which the buckling of columns are based (Metal structures – Hot
rolled sections). List the assumptions on which the theory is based. Can this theory be
extended to the cold deformed light gage steel structures? (14 Marks)

2 a. Explain the following : i) Behaviour of stiffened elements under uniform compression

ii) Form factor and its importance iii) Effective design width (with sketches). (15 Marks)
b. Write a note on post buckling of thin elements. (05 Marks)

3 a. Sketch the cold formed steel sections used for structural framing and for bridge decks.
(10 Marks)
b. Explain : i) Allowable stress design ii) LRFD (Load – resistance factor design).

c. Through stress – strain diagram of cold deformed light gage steel. Indicate Es and Tangent
modulus (Young’s modulus). (04 Marks)

4 Explain the buckling related to cold farmed steel sections under different loading conditions.
(20 Marks)

5 Explain the riveted connections, welded connections and bolted connections related to cold
deformed light gage steel structures. (20 Marks)

6 a. Sketch the stress distribution under flexure for the channel section under the following
conditions i) When the web of the section is vertical ii) When the web of the section
is horizontal. (10 Marks)
b. Discuss web crippling and web buckling related to cold deformed steel sections. Explain
with the aid of sketches. (10 Marks)

7 a. Draw the stress – strain curve for a steel sheet or strip : i) under sharp yielding and
ii) gradual yielding. Discuss their salient points. (12 Marks)
b. Discuss the behavoiur of stiffened elements under uniform compression. (08 Marks)
