Faults
Faults are displayed in two different colours depending on the types of faults: red for the faults that occur when the
ignition count is "0", and yellow for the faults that occur when the ignition count is over "1". The ignition count
indicates warm cycles which show the changes in the engine temperature from warming-up time to the time when
the engine temperature decreases to the atmosphreic temperature.
There are two types of faults that are displayed in red: the first type is stored in the injection computer memory when
the fault occurs once, and the second type is stored in the injection computer memory when the fault occurs twice
consecutively.
The first type is a serious fault that affects exhaust gas. In the case of the second type, the fault is erased if neither
of two consecutive tests, which are carried out under the driving conditions that are required for the injection
computer evaluation, detects the fault even thought the fault was declared present prior to the tests.
If the fault is erased after having been saved to the injection computer memory, the ignition count increases from that
point and the fault is displayed in yellow in CLIP.
The present or stored status of faults should be taken into consideration when the diagnostic tool is switched on
after the + after ignition feed (without any system components being active).
cardiagn.com
For a present fault, apply the procedure described in the Interpretation of faults section.
For a stored fault, note the faults displayed and apply the Notes section.
If the fault is confirmed when the instructions in the Notes section are applied, the fault is present. Deal with the
fault.
Conformity check
The aim of the conformity check is to check data that does not produce a fault on the diagnostic tool because the
data is inconsistent.
Therefore, this stage is used to:
– carry out fault finding on faults that do not have a fault display, and which may correspond to a customer complaint,
– check that the system is operating correctly and that there is no risk of a fault recurring after repairs.
The conformity check is a fault finding procedure carried out using the interpretation of statuses and parameters.
If a status does not function normally or a parameter is outside the permitted tolerance values, consult the
corresponding fault finding pages (see interpretation of statuses and parameters).
If the test with the diagnostic tool is OK but the customer complaint is still present, the fault should be processed by
customer complaints.
A summary of the overall procedure to follow is provided on the following page in the form of a flow chart.

Camshaft dephaser
The camshaft dephaser is activated by ON/OFF pulse duty (ratio) signals from the injection computer.
The camshaft dephaser changes the oil pressure and direction of flow for dephasage.
The longer pulse width advances valve angle.
The shorter pulse width retards valve angle.
When ON and OFF pulse widths become equal, the solenoid valve stops oil pressure flow to fix the intake valve
angle at the control position.

Downstream oxygen sensor (*1) Density of oxygen in exhaust gas
The injection computer determines the amount of fuel injection. The injection computer controls the length of time
the valve remains open (injection pulse duration). The amount of fuel injected is a program value in the injection
computer memory. The program value is preset by engine operating conditions. These conditions are determined by
input signals (for engine speed and intake air) from the crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor and the
mass air flow sensor.
To improve performance of the engine, the amount of fuel injection is increased or decreased according to the
following conditions.

This mechanism hydraulically controls cam phases continuously with the fixed operating angle of the intake valve.
The injection computer receives signals such as crankshaft position, camshaft position, engine speed, and engine
coolant temperature. Then, the injection computer sends ON/OFF pulse duty signals to the camshaft dephaser
depending on driving status. This makes it possible to control the shut/open timing of the intake valve to increase
engine torque in low/mid speed range and output in high-speed range.

The fuel evaporative emission control system (Evaporative Emission System) is used to reduce the level of
hydrocarbon that is emitted into the atmosphere from the vehicle fuel system. The activated carbon in the canister
reduces the level of hydrocarbon. When the engine is not running, the evaporative emission from the sealed fuel
tank is sent to the canister for storage. When the engine is running, the stored evaporative emission passes through
the canister bleed solenoid valve, and is then sucked into the canister by the negative pressure created by the intake
manifold. The canister bleed solenoid valve is controlled by the injection computer. When the engine is running, the
level of evaporative emission is controlled by the canister bleed solenoid valve in proportion to the air level increase.
The canister bleed solenoid valve closes the evaporative purge line during deceleration.

OBD system
The injection computer contains an OBD system which detects faults that are related to the engine sensor or
actuator, and records the following diagnostic data on exhaust gas.
Faults (DTC), freeze frame data
● Detection logic
First type: The DTC and the freeze frame data are stored in the injection computer memory when the fault occurs
once.
Second type: The DTC and the freeze frame data are stored in the injection computer memory when the fault occurs
twice consecutively.
Therefore, the engine check lamp may turn on after detecting the fault once, or turn on after detecting the fault twice
consecutively.
In the case of the second type, DTC and the freeze frame data are erased automatically if two tests, which are
carried out under the driving conditions, do not detect the fault even though the fault was declared present prior to
the tests.
If the fault is detected or declared present during driving, a red display appears on the CLIP regardless of the fault
types that are categorised by the fault detection logic.
Even if the fault is no longer present after being stored in the injection computer memory, the stored fault and freeze
cardiagn.com
frame data remains in the injection computer. The injection computer changes status of the fault to ‘stored fault’ if it
confirms that the fault no longer exists after a few cycles. When this happens, a yellow display appears on the CLIP.
When the injection computer is in the fail safe mode, all faults including the faults that have occurred once are stored
in the injection computer memory.
If the fault is detected more than 5 times consecutively when the MIL line is open-circuited and the injection
computer cannot notify the driver of the engine fault, the system fault is informed by cutting off the fuel supply at
2500RPM or higher.
When a fault that is related to the fail safe logic (excluding the MIL line) is detected, the fail safe function activates
enabling the driver to fix the fault without compromising safety.
Impact detected
If an impact has been stored by the injection computer (ET077 "Impact detected"), clear the faults using command
RZ001 "Fault memory". Then, switch off the ignition and wait for 10 s.
Then, the engine can be started.
