TUESDAY’S WORK

What are the effects of a lack of intercultural understanding, on

the victims, the perpetrators and society as a whole?

Indigenous  people  have  suffered  trauma  as  the  consequences  of  colonisation,
particularly  with  regard  violence,  loss  of  land  and  culture  and  as  well  as  the
policies  resulting  in  the  forced  removal  of  children.  In  numerous  families,  this
trauma  is  passed  down  generation  to  generation  with  damaging impacts. Studies
shown  that  people  who  faced  trauma  would  take  part  in  self-harm/destructive
behaviours and enter or remain in the criminal justice system.

The  stolen  generation  is  impacted  with  the  lack  of  intercultural.  They  don’t  who
their  family  are,  they  unable  to  bond  with  them  if  they  ever  see  them.  Some
children  see  their  mothers  in  their  30s  and  it  was  hard  for  them  to  create  a
connection.  The  children  of  the  stolen  generation  would  also  have  difficulty
parenting  their  own  kids.  Growing  up,  they  didn’t  have  that  affection  and  they
don’t  know  what it’s like. They are unable to keep relationships the reason behinf
this  is  they  never  had  someone  to  look  up  to  and  numerous  relationships  were
abusive and violent.
