CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

Summary of verb forms in conditional sentences

A. REAL IN THE PRESENT/FUTURE


EXAMPLES:
1. If you eat ice, it melts (it will melt)
2. If the temperature goes below 37‫ﹾ‬F, water freezes (water will freeze)
In these two sentences the simple present or the simple future is used in the result
clause (main clause) to express a predictable fact
3. If the weather is nice tomorrow, we will go on picnic
4. If I have enough time tomorrow, I will write to my parents
The simple future is used in the result clause (main clause) to express a particular
activity in the future.
5. If he calls, tell him I’ll be back soon
6. If he comes, give me a call
The simple present is used in the imperative statement as the main clause. “should’
may also be used in the real present/future such as:

B. UNREAL IN THE PRESENT/FUTURE
EXAMPLES
1. a. Fact : She does not love him, so she won’t marry him
b. Conditional : If she loved him, she would marry him
2. a. Fact : the weather is
not nice today, so I won’t go on picnic
b. Conditional : if the weather were nice today, I would go on picnic

The past form of verb “be” is used . In this case only “were” is used for both singular
and plural subjects
