1 Determine the possible range of values for a if the following equa-

tions are elliptic in nature
1.1 ux − avx + = 0
vt + aux = 0

Comparing with the standard form for system of Partial Differential Equations:

a1 ux + a2 vx + a3 uy + a4 vy + k1 = 0 (1)

b1 ux + b2 vx + b3 uy + b4 vy + k2 = 0 (2)
We know for system of equations to be Elliptic - |B|2 − 4|A||C| < 0

a1 a2 a3 a4 a1 a4 a3 a2
where |A| = det , |C| = det , |B| = det + det
b1 b2 b3 b4 b1 b4 b3 b2
For our PDE in equation 10 and 11

a1 = 1, a2 = −a, a3 = 0, a4 = 0 (3)
b1 = a, b2 = 0, b3 = 0, b4 = 1 (4)

1 −a 2 0 0
therefore |A| = det = a , |C| = det =0,
a 0 0 1

1 0 0 −a
|B| = det + det =1
a 1 0 0
therefore,

|B|2 − 4|A||C| = 1 − 4 ∗ (a2 ) ∗ 0 = 1 (5)

which is clearly > 0

Hence for every value of a the given sysytem of equation is Elliptic in nature.

2 Classify the following system of equations

ut + aux + bvx = 0 (6)

vt + bux + avx = 0 (7)

1
Comparing with general equation of system of PDEs:

a1 ux + a2 vx + a3 uy + a4 vy + k1 = 0 (8)
b1 ux + b2 vx + b3 uy + b4 vy + k2 = 0 (9)

here one independent variable is x and second independent variable is t

writing in the same format with t replacing y

aux + bvx + ut = 0 (10)

bux + avx + vt = 0 (11)

Type of PDE will depend upon whether |B|2 − 4|A||C| >0, =0 or <0

a1 a2 a3 a4 a1 a4 a3 a2
where |A| = det , |C| = det , |B| = det + det
b1 b2 b3 b4 b1 b4 b3 b2
For our PDE in equation 10 and 11

a1 = a, a2 = b, a3 = 1, a4 = 0 (12)
b1 = b, b2 = a, b3 = 0, b4 = 1 (13)

a b 2 2 1 0
therefore |A| = det = a − b , |C| = det =1,
a a 0 1

a 0 1 b
|B| = det + det = 2a
b 1 0 a
therefore,

|B|2 − 4|A||C| = (2a)2 − 4 ∗ (a2 − b2 ) ∗ 1 = 4b2 (14)

Hence system of PDEs are Elliptic.
