TEACHING IDEAS
Options for use

1. Laminate and use with whiteboard markers at a math station.


2. Project a page, or make an enlarged copy to use in a whole
group lesson to teach concepts before students attempt the work
themselves.
3. Good for homework as they are simple for parents to
supervise.
4. As a prompt for students to create their own math questions
in their math journals (or at a math station). Once they are used
to the format they can make up their own by cutting and pasting
the seahorses and number lines and writing their own equations.
(You can find these pages after worksheet 10).
5. Answer sheets are provided for students who like to self-
check.
6. Use the reflection sheet so students can think about how they
have managed these tasks.

COMMON CORE STANDARDS


K.CC.2 Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence
(instead of having to begin at 1).
K.CC.4 Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect
counting to cardinality.
K.OA.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images,
drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions,
or equations.
K.OA.2 Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within
10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
