Executive Summary
Overview
I interned at Childline which is an NGO that works for providing support shelter and
assistance to children in any kind of problem or danger. In my internship at
Childline, I was fortunate enough to be able to come across various learning
experiences, both in and out of the field, although majority of the work undertaken
by me was done off the field. I was given various official work to do at the NGO’s
office which had been mentioned in the weekly reports as well. During this period of
my internship I got to learn many new things. I was fully engaged to the activities
and work which is related to children during the internship period.
Week 1-
In the starting days of the internship I first of all learned how this NGO works. I
started with the observatory works first. I interacted with the whole staff and learned
which part of NGO is associated with which work. I read the case files which is
related to the cases of different children who were rescued by the ChildLine. I got to
know the cases of missing children, begging children, children being bullied in
schools, children who are the victim of child labor or sexual abuse, cases of child
marriage etc. I visited the CWC office and learned the process of how these children
who come to ChildLine are presented before CWC, how the paper work goes after
that and how the committee decided which child to handover to their parents and
which child to send to the shelter homes. For taking the custody of a child, parents
were called with the identity proof of theirs and also of there child. Any parent who
were unable to do so and fails to convince the committee that they were capable
enough to take the care of the child in the future were not given the custody of the
child and that child was sent to the shelter home. I was asked by my mentor to read
the POCSO Act, Juvenile Justice act and Child safeguarding policy. I was even made
to sign a contract on child safeguarding policy.
Week 2-
I came to know about the various outreaches done by the NGO for making people
aware about ChildLine, its working and how can they help any child between the age
of 0-18 years in any kind of problem by just dialing the toll free no. 1098.The
7
ChildLine team will reach them within 60 minutes. There were three kind of
outreaches we did- Group Outreach (with 3 or more people), Small outreach (with 2
people), Individual outreach (with only one person). I never got a chance to do an
individual outreach but I went on a no. of Group and Small outreaches. We
distributed the ChildLine pamphlets, put upon various posters and did the phone
testing of 1098 from that area which we outreached. We even maintained an
outreach register of the various outreaches we did.
I also went in a ChildLine camp which was organized in the Makar Sankrati fair to
unite the lost children from their parents. We rescued a lot of lost children.
Generally, we rescued the children about whom we were informed upon by people
by calling on the helpline no. 1098 but sometimes the members of AHTU also
brought the children they found begging on roads or doing inebriation on roads or
even if the child was associated with child labour in the shops. During my period of
internship these three types were the most brought up cases in the NGO. I even did
the counselling of various kids who were brought to the NGO on these cases. I got to
know that these kids had so much of potential and talent in them but were not able to
utilize them because of their unfortunate circumstances. I even once encountered a
newly born baby at CWC which was brought there by the railway unit of ChildLine.
The baby was abandoned by her parents at the railway station.
Week 3-
We did an open house in which our Childline team went to a village and collected
children for making them aware about the basic avenues of life like cleanliness and
basic education, and for understanding the difficulties faced by them. Our team
conducted several games during the process so that the children don’t feel bored by
the mundane speeches and have a better understanding of the concept we were trying
to imbibe in them. The children enjoyed a lot with us and we even rewarded the one
child who came first in all the games. We even showed them one documentary on
Cleanliness.
We did a puppet show on cleanliness at two schools. I found this a very fun loving
and interesting way of sensitizing children about the concept of ChildLine and
cleanliness. With the help of our puppet show we portrayed the various superstitions
8
we have in villages nowadays regarding cleanliness. It was really a fun-loving
exercise. A monthly meeting was conducted in which we discussed upon the various
rights of a child.
Week 4-
This was our last week of internship and so we decide to devote it to visit the various
shelter homes which were under the assistance of ChildLine. There were four shelter
homes- Prateeksha, for the girls; Snehalaya, for the boys; LSDP, for physically disabled
children and Asian for newborn babies. There were regular schedules for all the children
followed in the shelter homes. We saw that a regular fixed schedule was followed for all
the children in these shelter homes. They were provided proper education and a proper
decent lifestyle. We talked to a lot of children there and were touched by listening to their
stories.
Till this time I also came to learn about the various laws associated with the children
which my mentor asked me to read about like the POCSO act which is made for the
protection of children from various sexual abuses and the Juvenile Justice Act whose
main purpose is to address children in the 16-18 age group, in conflict with law. During
the last two days I also got to rescue a 16-year-old girl from a Child marriage which was
happening with her.

General Observation
I made a lot of general observations about child rights and various aspects associated with
the functioning of an NGO during this internship of mine. I got to know about the various
centers associated with the cases of children like Child Welfare Committee and Juvenile
Justice Court. I learned about how child line works. Got to know about the poor condition
of children. How poor children do not go to the schools and beg on the streets. I was able
to know how CWC (Child Welfare Committee) works. Got to know about various child
rights that how if we get a child on road or in some danger, we are not allowed to take
that child to our home or give something to that child or else strict actions can be taken
on us. We are expected to directly inform ChildLine or any other child associated NGO
or take that child to the police station.
I learned about the manners which are to be follow when we meet to any superior
authority. I was able to learn how any event organized by the coordination with every
team member which is the most important part for any event. Talking with the children’s
who missed from their home. This work at this NGO will surely help me in any child
associated case in my future.

Experience During The Training
An NGO from name itself means a non-profit organisation and mostly whose main
purpose is to address the social issue and one of those NGO in which I took my winter
internship was Childline, Gorakhpur under the supervision of Varun Thomas sir. My
experience of working as an intern at Childline was really memorable and fruitful for me.
I believe it will help me a lot in moulding my personality which will adhere me further in
my professional life. The time I spent as an intern at child helpline was totally rich in
experience which also enhanced my calibre and potential. This personal experience in
this profession has led me one step closer to the art of professionalism. I have not adapted
a lot of legitimate work but no doubt I learned many new things here like how to take the
counselling of a child, how to deal with people who have superstitious believes regarding
child labour and child marriage and also how to maintain a child report. I dealt with
several children who were separated or voluntary ran away from their family members. I
also came to know about the various hardships faced by the rural marginalised society of
our country which we never get to realise siting in our urban lavish areas. I learned a lot
upon child rights, POCSO Act and Juvenile Justice Act.
