The calipers should be mounted horizontally on a rigic base, and aligned to the disc centre line. 4.2. Check het he cise and brake pads are clean and free from ol or ether pollutants. 13. Tofitthe thruster, remove the two %" BSP (ISO G%4) locknuts and offer the hexagon push fod through the hoie in ane cf the bmn caliper arms, place locknuts on aush rod and make sure the —m Rexagon fits inte the sit in the opposite arm. Pull the arms ‘apart go that the brake pads are pressing against the disc (this 's, 1 made easier by removing the two tension return springs at the ‘back othe arms) and rotate the hexagon push roc unti the i gap between the thruster body and the arm is émm with the + / exagon fully engaged in the slot (see ciagram). Tighten one bo locknut, 50—60 Nm (37—44 pcunds feet) torque, te secure the ‘thruster to the arm. Tightening this nut compresses a spring L t inside the thruster and it should be tightened until the a 6mm gap disanpears. The second locinut is now tightenec | against the first, Replace the tension springs. For oppesite hand assembly, the caliper arms may pe interchanged. anect the air ine20 che %¥" ESP (ISO G%) air port on the thruster using a parallel thread fitting and Suitable sealing means (washer or thread sealan)), For maximum brake release spec, the airline ‘should be not less than 4" (10mm) nominal! bore. A quick exhaust valve should be fitted to the thruster if rapid brake application is requited. The air ine must be flexible to permit ‘tee movernent of the thruster to take place during operation. Nyion piping s excellent for this purpose provided thereis no Special fire hazard cr any other consideration which prohibit its use. 15 Operate the brake a few times (with the machine running #f possible, to condition the brake pad material), then carry out any statutory or other testing that may be required. Ifthe brakes designed for Severe ernergency use which might afterwards requite disc re-surfacing anc ar pad replacement, this should be bome in mind and testing at 50% or 75% full speed may be considered sufficient. 14 2. Operation 2.1 fan electric sciencid valves used to control brake operation, the delay time between the electrical ‘sgnal and full rake release depends on the eolencid response time, pipe sizes and lengths, aumoer of brake calipers and the air pressure. Typical brake release times using standard Twillex controllers are 238 follows: Type GL contrlier 100 — 200 ms | “ype GK contoter 40 — 100 ms, “The delay time to brake fully on wil be similar tothe release te unless a quick exhaust valveis ited, in which case the delay will be only 20—50 ms depending on the solenoid, and pipe lengths, as above. A constant push rod stroke of between 4 and Smm is maintained by the automatic siroke adjusting ‘mechanism which ensures consistent response times and spring thrust incependiently a friction pad wear 2. Maintenance Cheek the brake as necessary fo ensure that it remains clean and dry, and especially thatthe oacs and isc brake path are tree at oor cther polutants. Carry out any periodic stanstory testing that is required, or otherwise cneck tor satisfactory | Dariermance, 23 Replace the fnction pads when worn. The stroke ofthe hexagon push rod is maintained at approximately mm by the automatic adjusting mechanism in the thruster as pad wear occurs, ‘Taymaining constant spring thrust. When only one pad is worn down to 5mm al any point, athe orake pags should be replaced, The pivoied shoe design of the MR caliper ensures as far as ossible that wear is even aver tha whole surface o' the pads. The attainment of even wear is, nowever. depencent ona number of factors sucn as disc diameter, disc matenal and condition, disc temperature. cad material, power dissipation anc rubaing speed. it may not always be oossible therefore to obtain the ideal even wear pallern inservice under diverse operating conditions and, itt 's considered economic to do so, itis suggested thatthe acs be “tured around” penodicaly f inspection shows a tapered wear pattern to De developing. roo@ (87Ss TH/ME'YN] TZ:9T MY 90, €0/9T ‘o replace the pads, secure the installation 2s necessary to ensure safety, With air pressure released, remove the tension Springs at the end ofthe caliper arms, siacken the two %4" BSP (G%4) locknuts Securing the thruster and screw back the hexagon push rod to create space between pads and cise. Ease cut the spring retaining clips and remeve worn pads. Clean the disc and ft new pads. RE- ADJUST THE THRUSTER STROKE as described in 13 aver the page and retighten the nuts. Replace ‘he tension springs. Re-machining of the disc brake paths s not necessary unless they are cracked or badly ilted. Some | ‘arooving of the disc is normal ar not detrimental io performance, provided the surface has a polished Sbpearance. Disc wear is generally negigible f standard Twiflex brake pads are used. If skimming ot | the brake paths dees become necessary, however, the following tolerances must be observed: Thickness variation of disc flange: 0.05mm total vatiation at any civen racius. (Minimum thickness of lange: 75% of intial thickness. ‘Maximum run-curt ot flange: 0.1mm TLR, ‘Surface finish or braking paths: 2 micron or better. | 36 Under average operating conditions, no further maintenance should be necessary, but a light smear of grease on the caliper arm knuckie eins af three month intervals will help to maintain efficiency and reduce wear | 87. Replacement ot push rod seal (21) and diaphragm (6): remove the thruster from the caliper aiter securing the safety of the installaion. Access to the ‘O’ ring seal is obtained simply by unscrewing the pusn rod. After doing this the front and back helves cf the thruster can be separated ty unscrewing the twelve ME bolted connections round the flange. The diaphragm (6) is then easily replaced together with the “O" ring (20) if necessary. Lightly smear the inside diameter of the new diaphragm and the curside of the push red with mineral Grease before fiting. lf the interior of the thruster shows evidence of excessive moisture or contamination, check the arrangements for cleaning, drying and lubricating, | the air supply. Re-assemble, making sure that the lugs on the floating pawl engage wath the helical | slots in the cylindrical end of the mounting barrel (11). Check air tightness.
