CHAPTER 1

(Background of the Study)

English is the language of international communication. The need to be proficient

in the use of English language among non-native speakers has become a global

phenomenon. Today, educators are face with the challenge of addressing the need of

the growing number of students whose primary language is not English. While

mastering other skills and content in other subject areas, there is the necessity for these

learners to gain proficiency in English.

The effects of English proficiency and success in mathematics has not been specific.

English is composed of much proficiency which are not always closely related. It's

examines correlation between mathematics success and various English language

skills, including vocabulary, reading comprehension, reading speed, listening, structure,

and expression.

The researchers found a study that English proficiency have an effect to mathematics

achievement. The study of Marita N. Diloy found out that in Lumampong National High

School and Asis National High School in Cavite said that if the English proficiency score

increases or decreases the mathematics rating also increases or decreases.

The researchers want to know if English proficiency has its effect to Mathematics

Achievement. This study will be conducted in St.John’s Wort Montessori School

The researchers is also interested to test the reading comprehension of the students of

St.John’s Wort Montessori School of Antipolo that could also result to find an answer

whether English Proficiency could have an effect to mathematical achievement.

(Statement of The Problem)

This study sought to determine the Effects of English Proficiency to Mathematics

Achievement of High School Student in St.John’s Wort Montessori School of Antipolo.

Specifically, it sought answer to the following questions.

1. What is the English proficiency level of the respondents as per result of the English

language proficiency test.

2. What is the Mathematical Achievement of the respondents as per result of the

Mathematical exam.

3. Is there a significant Effects between English Proficiency and

Mathematical Achievement of the respondents.

(Significance of the Study)

The findings of the study would benefit the Administrator, Teachers, Students,

and parents as discussed below:

To The Students: The result of this study would make the learners become aware of

the status of their academic achievement, specifically in Mathematics, thus be

challenged but properly guided to do better and improve their performance. With such

knowledge, they would be motivated to strive harder and study more seriously, to

enable them to achieve excellence in Mathematics subjects.

To The Parents: the findings of the study would serve as an eye opener to the parents

so that they would be truly supportive to the studies of their children.

To The Teachers: The teachers would derive factual information on the extent of their

influence on the overall school performance of their students. Hence they would be

inspired to initiate newly improved approaches in teaching, strive to avail of in service

trainings and seminar workshopFutus, which the school provides for the realization of its

educational goal. Moreover, they would make the necessary adjustment in their

teaching to make them more relevant and meaningful.

To The Administrator: The findings of this study would give insights to the

administrators in the needs and problems of teachers, thus making supportive to the

curricular programs being implemented in the school. It would make them aware of how

their school/teachers and the students relate in terms of using English as medium of

instruction for the effectiveness of understanding not only in Mathematics but also with

other subjects.

To The Future Researchers. The result of this study will be their basis in finding or

researching more this topic and will serves as an inspiration for them to continue

researching and developing their skills in English and Mathematics

(Scope and Limitations of the study)

The study focused on testing of Reading Comprehension of the Student in

St.John’s Wort Montessori School of Antipolo in effects to student’s achievement in

Mathematics. This research will be undertaken using a survey questionnaire, one for

reading comprehension and another one to test mathematical knowledge to determine

whether English proficiency has an effect to Mathematical Achievements.

The questionnaires will be prepared for 30 high school students as our respondents

who are attending St.John’s Wort Montessori School of Antipolo for the school year of

2019-2020
