EKSTERNA PROCJENA ZNANJA - 6. RAZRED
This week in 'A day in a life' we're in Australia with the young actor Steven Perry. They're
making a new series of everybody's favourite programme, 'Stay cool'.
It's half past six in the morning and in his hotel room Steven is getting up. He doesn't have to
start filming until nine o'clock. So why does he have to get up so early?
It's now half past seven and here's the answer. He has to do his school work. Steven is only
fourteen years old, so there’s a teacher here for him and all the other young actors and actresses.
They have to have their lessons before they start filming and between the different scenes.
It’s now nine o’clock, but they can’t start filming, because it’s raining hard. So we have to wait.
This is our chance to ask some questions.
Interviewer: You work in the theatre and on TV. Are they very different?
Steven: Yes! When you make a TV programme, you don't have to learn all your lines.
You only have to learn each scene. And you can always do the scene again. But in
a play you have to remember all your lines, and you can’t stop and say ‘Sorry, can
we do that again, please?’
Interviewer: So are TV programmes easier?
Steven: No. With films and TV programmes I often have to work outdoors, and it can
23
EKSTERNA PROCJENA ZNANJA - 6. RAZRED
sometimes be very cold or wet. With a play, I work in a nice, warm theatre.
And I can go home every night. I don’t have to stay in a hotel.
Interviewer: Do you have to travel a lot?
Steven: Yes, I do for television. And that’s very nice at first, but after a few weeks you just
want to go home.
Melissa’s budgerigar
Hello! My name's Melissa. My pet is a budgerigar. He's male and his name's Compo. That's
C O M P O. He's about two years old now. He's green with a yellow face. I keep him in a cage in
24
EKSTERNA PROCJENA ZNANJA - 6. RAZRED
the living room. He can talk. He says ‘Hello’ and ‘I’m a pretty boy’. My dad doesn’t like him,
because he’s very noisy and he talks when my dad’s watching television. Compo eats seed. I
feed him every day and I put clean water in his water bottle. I clean his cage every Saturday.
Peter’s tarantula
Hi! I'm Peter. I've got a pet. It's a tarantula. She's female and her name's Betsy. That's B E T S Y,
Betsy. She's quite young for a tarantula. They can live for twenty or thirty years, but Betsy's only
five years old. I keep her in a tank in my bedroom. She eats insects, but she doesn’t eat a lot. She
only eats about six insects a week. I feed her every Wednesday and Saturday, but I give her clean
water every day. A lot of people don’t like tarantulas, but I think they’re nice. They’re very clean
and they aren’t noisy - not like my brother’s hamster!
Dinner talk
It's seven o'clock in the evening. The Lennons are having dinner.
Ann: We are going on a school trip to London.
Dad: Great. When?
Ann: On Friday. We are going to visit the Queen’s palace.
Rosie: I want to see the Queen and the prince and the dragon.
Bob: Rosie, there are no dragons.
Rosie: There are, there are, and they have got seven heads.
Bob: Yes, hundreds.
Ann: We are also going to a museum.
Rosie: What’s a museum?
Mum: It’s a place where you can see old things.
Ann: And we are going to the theatre.
Rosie: It’s a place where you can see a play.
Bob: I’d like to see the London Eye.
Rosie: London has got E Y E S?
Bob: No, silly. It’s the name of a big wheel. It goes round and round. It’s on the River Thames.
Ann: The River Thames is a river in London. There are a lot of bridges over the Thames.
Rosie: I can sing a song about London Bridge: London Bridge is falling down, falling down,
falling down, London Bridge is falling down, my fair lady!
Mum: Ha, ha. All right my fair lady. Eat up your fish now.

Kangaroos live in Australia and New Guinea. There are fifty-five kinds of kangaroos. Some
are very small and some are really big. They all have big, strong legs, and they can all jump. The
big red and grey kangaroos can jump nine metres in one jump. Kangaroos sleep during the day
and look for food at night. They eat grass, leaves, and plants. A mother kangaroo has only one
baby. It is called a ‘’joey’’. A baby kangaroo can’t see or hear. Its mother carries it around in a
kind of pocket for the first eight months of its life.
The hottest place in the world is the Sahara desert in Africa. But there are deserts in many
other places: in America, in Africa, in Asia and in Australia. In 1917 the temperature in Death
Valley, in the United States, was 49° C every day for six weeks. That’s very hot!
But deserts are not always hot. After dark, deserts are very cold.
Not many animals and plants can live in deserts, because it doesn’t rain very often. But one
animal likes the desert-the camel. It has big feet to walk on the sand. It can live for a long time
without water. Sometimes it doesn’t drink anything for weeks – so it gets very thirsty! When it
finds water it can drink 50 litres at a time.

MY TOWN
Dear Stefan,
How are you? I’m fine!
Thank you for your letter! It’s very interesting. Do you like living in a big town?
I live in a small town called Stromness, in northern Scotland.
I like living here. There aren’t many people (and there aren’t many trees!), but it’s very beautiful.
You can see lots of interesting birds and animals here.
In December the days are very short. It’s very cold, but it doesn’t snow very often. I like the
summer best. My favourite month is June, because it’s warm, and because my birthday is in
June. At the end of June the days are very long.
Write again soon, and tell me about your school.

My name’s Ella. I’ve got a penfriend. His name’s Pedro and he comes from Spain. Pedro’s
got a brother and a sister. They live in a small village. Pedro and his brother go to school in the
village, but his sister works in a hospital in the city. Their parents work on their farm.
At the moment I’m writing a letter to Pedro. I write to him every month by e-mail. We write
to each other in English. Pedro learns English at school, but I don’t speak Spanish. We learn
French at school.
Here’s a photo of Pedro. He’s playing tennis with his sister. His brother is watching them.

SARA - THE SUPERGIRL
Sara is a very unusual girl. She is only 10 years old, but she does a lot of strange things. She
goes to school on foot. She doesn’t wear a uniform like all the other children. She wears jeans, a
cap and a pink T-shirt with two big letters SS. She’s an excellent student. She is good at every
kind of sport. She plays the guitar, the piano, the violin, and the flute. She is very popular at
school, because she often helps her friends with their homework and when they are in trouble.
She feeds wild animals in the zoo. She helps old and poor people. She sometimes catches
burglars. She even works with the police on some secret missions. She always wakes up early in
the morning, because she is always busy. She helps people, does a lot of homework, and plays

In Scotland, there is a popular legend about a monster. The monster lives in a lake called
Loch Ness, near the town of Inverness. Loch Ness is 32 km long, 5 km wide, and very, very
deep. The monster’s name is Nessie. People say that she is very big, and that she has got a long
neck, like a snake.
But does Nessie really exist? Some people say yes, some say no. Scientists are exploring the
lake with cameras and sound equipment. Sometimes they see something and sometimes they
hear something, but they do not understand the mystery of Loch Ness.
The legend of the monster is very famous, and millions of tourists from all over the world

READING
2 Read the text. Write true (T) or false (F).
The hottest place in the world is the Sahara desert in Africa. But there are deserts in many other
places: in America, in Africa, in Asia and in Australia. In 1917 the temperature in Death Valley,
in the United States, was 49° C every day for six weeks.
