ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate the implication of playing Mobile Legends in

gamers social life. This research papers give information to the readers about

playing Mobile Legends and how it affects the gamer social interaction with

others. It tackles about how the certain games affect the gamers and their lives.

The main objective of this research is to find and discover the implication of

playing Mobile Legends in the gamer’s social life.

The respondents of this study were the senior high in Kabasalan Science

and Technology High School at F.L Peña, Kabasalan Zamboanga Sibugay

Province. They were interviewed and questions about effects of playing mobile

legends in their social interaction. To gather data in this study, the researcher

used a interview questionnaire to elicit answers from the respondents.

There were five overall implications of Mobile Legends attained from this

study. These were (1) Poor parental advisory, (2) Builds relationships, (3) Pro-

social behaviour, (4) being honest and (5) argument. There were bad and good

implications that has been formulated. The implications of playing Mobile

Legends can benefit to the social life development of gamers and also give social

life decline for the gamers. It can be concluded that can benefit and suffer from

playing Mobile Legends which is highly dependable for the gamers lives.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Technology has come a long way. With the invention of computers,

cellular phones and the Internet, it is inevitable to avoid gaming with the use of

these modern devices. Most people tend to use their vacant hours on playing

online Mobile Legends games for fun and entertainment.

Internet as a source of information plays an important role in developing

one's mind and life experiences by creating productive works in schools, offices,

and even at home. Nowadays, this can be a person's most efficient strategic tool

for enabling himself to take charge and cope with the fast growing technology.

The fact that people live in on informative lifestyle where everything is

updated, internet became one of the necessities of human beings regardless of

age or sex in today's society. However, the influence of this useful machine on

youth is undeniably questionable. As to what Rock said, all these technologies

are very good at distracting people. In line with this development, online gaming

was created to give entertainment to people.

Playing Mobile legends can give and provide players that something no

one can give. According to some researches it is beneficial. It enables the mind

of the players to be more active, especially those puzzle-based games.

Furthermore, it helps the player to come up with decisions in tight situations,

especially those adventure games that keep the players to be alert, active and

strategic.

Students' learning takes place unexpectedly, but the inappropriate usage

of playing online games also leads in some problems such as being distracted in

school. Further, it is where the attention of the child was divided that even their

health and social life is unknowingly affected. Several studies in psychology have

found out that increased time spent on the Internet can lead to negative impact

on a person's ability to communicate appropriately face-to-face with friends,

peers, family members including parents.

Studies revealed that the human brain is easy to destruct and one of the

reasons is using technology. The education system tends to go with the flow with

this constant change in the society in order to get things relevant with the

generations today.

According to the quarterly assessment of Global Games Market Report,

as of 2017, the Philippines ranked # 29 worldwide in terms of game revenues

with a total of 29.9million of gamers nationwide. In the survey conducted by

Philippines Consumer Gamer Insights on the same year, 18% of male and 16%

of female in the age group 10-20 years old are active mobile players. With these,

students maybe addicted to gaming for self satisfaction and past time.

In Kabasalan Science and Technology High School it is evident that senior

high (SHS) student tends to engross themselves in playing mobile legends.

Playing Mobile Legends leads to the senior high school students to affect

their social interaction. Social interaction is an exchange between two or more

individuals and is building block of society. As an individual we should give

importance to socialize with co-exist.

The researchers felt the need to determine the impact of playing Mobile

Legends to the students and their social interaction. The purpose of this study is

to find out the implications of playing Mobile Legends to the social interaction of

the students.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to investigate the implication of playing Mobile Legends in

gamers social life. Furthermore, this research seeks to answer the following

research questions:

1. How does Mobile Legends affect your relationship with others?

2. What are the effects on your social life in playing Mobile Legends?

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research papers give information to the readers about playing Mobile

Legends and how it affects the gamer’s social interaction with others. It tackles

about how the certain games affect the gamers and their lives.

The main objective of this research is to find and discover the implication

of playing Mobile Legends in the gamer social life. Knowing the reasons and the

effects of playing mobile legends can easily help the students manage their time,

to be more accountable in school, to focus on their studies and social interaction.

This is mainly for the purpose of knowing the effects of playing mobile

legends among senior high students, to help them minimize and avoid playing

mobile legends game.

This study may help also the readers for them to understand, know and

give insights to those students who played Mobile Legends and give them

information about the said online game. It is also beneficial to the students for

them to value their time. To help the students to minimize playing mobile legends

and spending time with their families, friends and classmates, and give

information about how does playing mobile legends affect the social interaction. It

helps also in both parents and their child who played Mobile Legends, because

this study helps the parents to give them knowledge about the effects of playing

Mobile legends. This study will encourage the parents to look for their children in

playing this certain game and limit the time they play. It also give the parents

glimpse of their child’s social lives.

1.4 SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study only focused on the senior high students of the school year

(2019-2020) of Kabasalan Science Technology High School to the students who

play Mobile Legends game. Interviews and questioners will serves as the main

instruments for gathering data. There were 5 respondents of senior high school

students. The respondents were selected based on their sex and the study

conducted at the Kabasalan Science and Technology High School. Data

gathering will be from the start of January until the last day of the semester.

1.5 CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

A paradigm below shows the variables and processes that were used in

the study. The outputs are the implication of social interaction in playing Mobile

Legends.

1.6 DEFINITIONS OF TERMS

 Global Games Market Report- is a subscription service that includes

quarterly trend and forecasting update report as well as continuous access

to a dashboard with gamer and game revenue forecasts by country and

segment.

 International Classification of Disease (ICD-11)- the International

Classification of Disease, 11th version (ICD-11) on the 18th June 2018. The

international Classification of Disease (ICD) was developed as a means to

ensure uniformity in recording of disease for mortality and morbidity

reports worldwide.

 Mobile game – is a game played on a feature phone, smart phone , PDA,

tablet computer, portable media player or calculator.

 Mobile Legends – is a multiplayer online battle arena game designed for

mobile phones. The two opposing teams fight to reach and destroy the

enemy base while defending their own bas for control of a path, which

connect the bases.

 Online Game –Online games are ubiquitous on modern gaming platforms,

including PCs, consoles and mobile devices, and span many genres,

including first-person shooters, strategy games and massively multiplayer

online.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter contains the related literature of our research study .Mobile

Legends is a 5v5 MOBA for handheld devices that offers a variety of playable

heroes, game modes, and intense, fast-paced game play. With controls

optimized for touch screen devices, players can quickly get set up to play a

match against other players in real time. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a

multiplayer (5vs5) online battle arena (MOBA) game designed for mobile phones.

The two opposing teams fight to reach and destroy the enemy's base while

defending their own base for control of a path, the three "lanes" known as "top",

"middle" and "bottom", which connects the bases .Weaker computer-controlled

characters, called "minions", spawn at team bases and follow the three lanes to

the opposite team's base, fighting enemies and turrets.

In each team, there are five players who each control an avatar, known as

a "hero", from their own device. Heroes can be grouped into 6 different roles,

Marksman, Assassin, Mage, Support, Fighter and Tank. (Low, Aloysius (18 July

sequence of social actions between individuals or groups. In sociology, social

interaction is a dynamic sequence of social actions between individuals (or

groups) who modify their actions and reactions due to actions by their interaction

partner(s). Social interactions can be differentiated into accidental, repeated,

regular and regulated. A social interaction is a social exchange between two or

more individuals. These interactions form the basis for social structure and

therefore are a key object of basic social inquiry and analysis. Social interaction

can be studied between groups of two (dyads), three (triads) or larger social

groups. Social structures and cultures are founded upon social interactions. By

interacting with one another, people design rules, institutions and systems within

which they seek to live. Symbols are used to communicate the expectations of a

given society to those new to it, either children or outsiders. Through this broad

schema of social development, one sees how social interaction lies at its core.

The empirical study of social interaction is one of the subjects of micro sociology

which concerns the nature of everyday human social interactions and agency on

a small scale. Methods include symbolic interaction and ethno methodology, as

well as later academic sub-divisions and studies like psychosocial studies,

conversational analysis and human-computer interaction. With symbolic

interaction reality is seen as social, developed interaction with others. It argues

that both individuals and society cannot be separated far from each other for two

reasons. One being that they are both created through social interaction. The

second reason is they cannot be understood in terms without the other. Ethno

methodology, an offshoot of symbolic interaction, which questions how people’s

interactions can create the illusion of a shared social order despite not

understanding each other fully and having differing perspectives.

Social Growth is how we develop the ability to deal with other people and

different groups in society. SOCIAL GROWTH: "Our social growth sees us be

able to participate in group discussions and be able to people when we are out

April 13, 2013).

Social development as the internet and video games have become

increasingly present in the lives of children and adolescence, many questions

have been raised in relation to how these mediums have impacted the

development of adolescence. Yee (2006) suggest that playing video games does

not leave an individual mentally incept. In fact, Yee explains that many hardcore

gamers are goal-seeking and high achievement students. To further press the

point, Cole and Griffiths (2007) explains that online video games require a high

level of social interaction and cooperation. Large numbers of players must work

together to accomplish certain goals and it is only through teamwork that many of

these goals can be meet. Additionally, Cole and Griffiths further challenge the

myth that gamers are socially inactive by demonstrating that eighty percent of the

912 participants in their study preferred to play their games with friends and

family. This research suggest that online video games can be a medium through

which adolescence are able to interaction with one another and from significant

and meaningful relationship with each other. Krotoski (200) support this claim

and assert that MMORPG’s encourage group interaction that results in forming of

significant friendship as well as personal empowerment. In fact, work by Weibel

et al (2007) suggest that players have a deeper sense of immersion and

enjoyment when playing with other people as compared of simply playing with a

computer opponent. This may direct gamers to seek out interaction with other

human players within the game.

Family interaction it is an interaction within a video game includes more

than relationship with stranger. Durkin and Barber (2002) explains that gamer

tend to have a high level of closeness as compared to adolescence who do not

play games at all implying that social cohesion within the family is generally

higher with gamers. Moreover, despite the fact that video games are often played

alone, many gamers prefer to play with friends or family as indicated by

interviews by LAN gamers (Janz and Martens, 2005). This could be, in part,

because the gamer environment allows family members to interact in each other

in a new and interesting format that foster togetherness and teamwork. Work by

Kubey and Larson (1990) suggest that playing video games may show higher

arousal and more positive subjective states when day play video games whit

friends or family. If playing whit family and friends can enhance the experience of

playing video games then this maybe an incentives of adolescents to seek out

family and friends to play a games with Durkin and barber (2002) suggest thus

very idea claiming that adolescence that feel close to their families may play

video games more frequently in order to share the experience with family

members. In particularly gaming together can produce stronger bonds between

fathers and sons ( Jhanz & martens,2005).

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the methods being used in conducting this

research paper, hence this chapter will elaborate the methods and techniques

that are used in this study. This chapter contains the information on the research

design, the locale, respondents of the study, sampling techniques, data gathering

instrument/tools, data analysis and the observance of research ethics.

3.1 RESEARCH DESIGN

This research used a qualitative design, analyzed and understand the said

study. A Qualitative research is a scientific method observation to gather non-

numerical data.

3.2 LOCALE OF THE STUDY

This research study was conducted in the campus of Kabasalan Science

and Technology High School on the 2 nd semester of school year 2019-2020. The

senior high students are the respondents.

3.3 RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of this study were the senior high in Kabasalan Science

and Technology High School at F.L Peña, Kabasalan Zamboanga Sibugay

Province. They were interviewed and questions about effects of playing mobile

legends in their social interaction. The researchers decided that the respondents

are the known long time gamer with experienced through that factors that affect

their social lives by playing mobile legends. The respondents were both senior

high students and teenager.

3.4 DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENTS

To gather data in this study, the researcher used a survey questionnaire to

elicit answers from the respondents. Below are the tools that were used in this

study.

 Survey Questioners

Surveys questionnaires are instruments to be used for collecting data in

survey research. They usually include a set of standardized questions that

explore a specific topic and collect information about demographics, opinions,

attitudes, or behaviours.

The survey instrument which was a questionnaire in this study contains

questions regarding the causes and effects of mobile legends game. The

questions also contains about the students who are addicted in mobile legends

game, the academic behaviour and the affects of their social interaction.

 In-depth Interview Guide

The in-depth interview questions in this study contained the follow-up

information of the data to be asked from the survey questionnaires.

3.5 DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The data for this research were collected using a survey questionnaire

and the interview guide. First, the researcher went to the campus of Kabasalan

Science and Technology High School. Second, the researcher set appointments

of the respondents so that the time would not be wasted during

surveys/interviews. Third, there were a suitable questions modified from related

research and individual questions about playing mobile legends and its effects in

social interaction.

3.6 DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE

Data obtained from the survey were presented and analyzed using

questioners and interviews. Data generated from open-ended questions were

processed, analyzed and understanding.

3.7 OBSERVANCE OF RESEARCH ETHICS

This study sees to it that the respondents will not harmed nor offended by

the questions they undertake on the questioners and interviews. The researchers

observed sensitivity and feelings of the respondents. There were instances the

respondents realized about the effects of playing mobile legends, and also they

realized about the real situation of their lives regarding to their parents, friends,

classmates and problems. Also the researchers insured that informed consent,

privacy, and confidentiality, respect, justice and fairness, protection of

participants from risks, right to withdraws, etc. were observed at the conduct of

the study.

CHAPTER 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter represents an analysis and interpretation of the data obtained

in the study and discusses an exploration of the research problem. Its findings

were based on the data gathered through interviews and questions from the

respondents. Those data were analyzed to present, discussed on interpreted and

emerged that serves an answer to the research problem.

4.1 Implications of Mobile Legends on Social life.

Excessive activity leads to poor parental advisory because of failed

responsibilities. Evidently, playing Mobile Legends affects the parental

interactions. One of our respondents that is a male uttered that he “experienced

scolded by his mother as they were used bad manners in return”. According to

the respondent who also male, confess that “his mother scolded him due to

putting lot of time to play Mobile Legends and the reasons is their responsibilities

as individual were neglected due to Mobile Legends”.

Mobile Legends can make the gamers meet a new friends personally and

in a world of game. Gamers meet new friends by inviting other person to play and

they usually meet their special someone on playing. Mobile Legends is also one

of the reasons that leads to a problem and argument.

Mobile Legends game can also inflict good things to family also. It

generates attachment to the family especially those family members are used to

play Mobile Legends, one of our respondents who also male uttered that “his

older brother was also a gamer of a certain game and that was one of the ways

that they are now closed with each other”.

4.1.2 SOCIALIZING TO NON-RELATIVE PERSONS

Gamer tends to lie to their relationship for them to play. We interview our

respondents and they stated a clear facts that “they are committed to someone,

Mobile Legends games also affects the relationship of the two persons who are

committed to each other, it also makes the gamer that was generated false

utterance to excuse his gaming activity. Mobile Legends game is one of the

reason that they have argument.”

Respondents told us that they “also meet new friends who have the same

preference in games and they also used to understand each other because they

have the same interest and can invite friends to play with”. It builds also in social

relationship within the gaming community. All of the respondents experienced a

good interaction in their gaming world.

In summary, their were five (5) overall implications of playing Mobile

Legends in this study and these are poor parental advisory or parental guidance,

dishonesty, build relationship and argument.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of study, and recommendations

derived from the analysis and interpretation of the data.

5.1 SUMMARY

This study aimed to determine the implication of Mobile Legends affect the

gamers social life. It was done by interviewing six respondents. Interview

questions is based on our study were used to gather information to the selected

respondents. Through data analyzing on the questionnaires was used to find out

the implications of playing Mobile Legends accommodating only the scope and

delimitations of the study. After the analysis of the data, the findings were

formulated.

5.1.1 FINDINGS

Playing Mobile Legends can affect the interaction of the gamers in their

family. Playing Mobile Legends can generate poor parental advisory and

promotes pro-social behaviour. Mobile Legends can give interest to the gamers

to be active in playing this certain game, it can also lead to scolding from the

parent, not usually giving some time to talk and bond to the family.

In socializing to non-relative persons, there are the implications that were

acquired from the gamers. Mobile Legends can also have social development

because when a gamers invite their friend to play along and it can benefit also to

the gamers to give more importance to socialize with their friends and it was pro-

social behaviour.

Playing Mobile Legends can affect also the relationship of the partner or

special someone to the gamers being dishonest to my partner can leads to lie

and give excuses so that the gamers can play to seek pleasure and

entertainment for themselves. The positive thing is, Mobile Legends game can

builds relationship inside the world of gaming. You will earn friends and perhaps

meet them in person.

It is also affects the gamers personal lives, because playing Mobile

Legends can make also issue that leads to arguments to others that surrounds

you.

4.2 CONCLUSION

The following conclusions were derived from the findings. There were five

overall implications of Mobile Legends attained from this study. These were (1)

Poor parental advisory, (2) Builds relationships, (3) Pro social behaviour, (4)

being honest and (5) argument. There were bad and good implications that has

been formulated. The implications of playing Mobile Legends can benefit to the

social life development of gamers and also give social life decline for the gamers.

It can be concluded that a gamer can benefit and suffer from playing Mobile

Legends which is highly dependable for the gamers lives.

4.3 RECOMMENDATION

Based on the study, various recommendation were attained.

Limit the usage of playing Mobile Legends. Online Mobile Legends game

affects our time instead of doing our responsibilities, do our task, make our lives

better and this playing Mobile Legends can lead to poor parental advisory or

parental guidance. By that, playing Mobile Legends must be monitored for both

the gamers and parents have a fair communication to each other.

Mobile Legends builds a good social interaction for everyone. Playing

Mobile Legends game results to pro-social behaviour to the family and to other

people as clearly emphasized by the respondents.

Parental supervision or Parental Guidance to the gamers. The parents

should talk with their child in on ordered manner so that their child will obey them.

The child will not obey if a parents approached them in an improper manner, so

as a parent you should approached your child in a proper manner.

Communication between relationship partners should be done in proper

way. Having a good talk with your special someone can lead to a better

understanding. This will ease the tension between your relationship and give time

to each other.

Researcher: Tell me something about yourself

a. Describe yourself as a teenager.

Respondent: I described my self a beautiful young lady,

happy, crazy, simple girl, and I was a type of child that was

lovable and generous to others.

b. How were you engaged in playing Mobile Legends ?

Respondent: I was engaging playing Mobile Legends

because of my friends influenced me to play with it.

Researcher: What is your average time spent in playing Mobile legends in a

day?

Respondent: 2-3 hours in a day

Researcher: Did you gain friends because of playing Mobile Legends? How?

Respondent: Yes, when we are on bottle I meet new friends and when I posted

a topic of Mobile Legends they notice as a player and they will message me to

make friend with me. Researcher: How does playing Mobile Legends affect your

relationship with your family?

Respondent: When I was in play mode, my mother commanded me to clean the

house and do my responsibilities but I always got angry because I don’t want to

stop playing Mobile Legends.

Researcher: If you are in a relationship right now, does playing Mobile legends

sometimes becomes the reason of your argument? If not, does playing Mobile

Legends is one of the reasons why you you’re not in a relationship?

Respondent: No, the Mobile Legends game is not the reason why I’m not in a

relationship and Mobile Legends is my hobby and it can make me happy.

Researcher: Overall, how does playing Mobile Legends affects your social life?

Respondent: I’m very serious and focused to play Mobile Legends and usually I

don’t care about others and I don’t want to be to be disturbed and that can affect

my social life.

Researcher: What advice can you give to other Mobile Legends players?

Respondent: The advice that I can give to other players is don’t be addicted and

don’t focused only at Mobile Legends. And please study hard and focused to it so

that your future will not be ruined.
