COLD TREATMENT DEPOT & EMR Guide
2018

PURPOSE:
This document defines The Maersk Way of doing Cold Treatment shipments and provides
guidance for EMR teams and vendors to ensure a successful completion of Cold Treatment
cargo.

The document describes reefer equipment preparation and special requests derived from the
service we are offering to our customers, as well as the stuffing process.

These are additional steps for preparation of containers for Cold Treatment shipments to be
applied on top of the standard PTI. EMR SOP must be followed in addition to this guide.

Revised: 2018-06-01 EMR & Depots Guidelines

Version: 1.2 Process owner: Global Equipment Excellence

EQUIPMENT RANGES – PREPERATION

1. A comprehensive list of reefer equipment approved for Cold Treatment must be
available to the depot/vendor.
2. Use Carrier Primeline and/or Starcool CIM6.
3. The depot/vendor will PTI containers from the list of approved reefers and make the
required arrangements with local authorities for USDA probe calibration (and
certificate).
4. A forecast will be made available to the depot on a weekly basis to always have a
proper stock factor of Cold Treatment ready reefer boxes.

Pre-stuffing steps:

1. Extra check on the amount of refrigerant according to manufacturer specifications.

2. Containers with a completed PTI done, must be clean and dry with no residues to be
found inside the cargo space.
3. ACT or ACT+ function to be programed (activated) in all C/T containers to be used.
4. Post-treatment temp setting, which can be different than treatment temperature, is to
be programmed at the time of activating ACT* / ACT+**.

PROBE CALIBRATION
1. USDA Probes to be clearly numbered both ends.
2. Check controller has the correct container id, date, year & time (UTC).
3. Ensure controller serial numbers (sticker on controller) matches data download.
4. Ensure probe plug sockets are clean and free from corrosion or dampness, spray with
contact cleaner moisture repellent if necessary.
5. Ensure USDA probes are locked into the receptacles with the coupling locking device.
Designated inspector will check at calibration or load point and reject if not secure or
numbered both ends.
6. USDA probes are to be calibrated as per specific protocol.
7. After calibration probes to be set out in the 17th t bar slot from the right-hand side
looking from the door.
8. Ensure probe cables do not hang in front of buffer (kick) plate stoppers as this may
damage the cables during loading.
9. After calibration refit plastic sheath to sensor especially for M/H long distance
bookings.

CHECK LIST – PRE-TRIP INSPECTION

1. Check cable and plug for damage. Max 2 splices on the cable permitted and these
must be repaired according to EMR procedures using parts from the standard
consumable list.
2. Check cable securing clamp has not damaged the cable in the cable compartment.
3. Check door seals are in good order.
4. Ensure reefers are fitted with drain plugs and kazoos.
5. Ensure reefer fitted with an operational RCD.
6. Check RCD battery functioning.
7. Check and confirm that the controller can communicate with a SW or data bank card,
proving pins in the controller are not damaged.
8. Check software version for Carrier PrimeLINE/Star Cool CIM6. The latest software
and configuration must always be used.
9. Check that controller date and time is correct – MUST be UTC.
10. Check a new battery pack has been fitted. Only genuine Carrier battery packs may
be fitted to Carrier units and genuine Starcool battery packs to Star cool units. Date
to be written on battery pack with a permanent marker pen. Reefers arriving in the
terminal with battery packs without dates should be changed.
11. Check back up battery fully charged and connections are sound including charging
link into ka14/ ka11 on carrier units. Battery wires are to be stripped back enough to
ensure a good connection.
12. Check set point is set as per booking.
13. Defrost interval set to AUTO on both Carrier and Star Cool units.
14. Fresh air vent calibrated and set as per release.
15. Check kick plate is in sound condition and not damaged in any way.
16. USDA probes are long enough and numbered correctly both ends.
17. Check data can be accessed from external data port.
18. Calibrate cargo probes in ice-water bath and update correction factors. Calibration
details to be written in a calibration report.

STUFFING GUIDELINES
Probes must be inserted to the pulp of the commodity and placed in positions according to
the protocol outline - ensuring correct pulp temperature readings will be registered.
When stuffing is completed, the reefer must be switched ON.
A technician to verify unit running, without apparent damages or noises.
Readings must be taken to complete the Stuffing Report.
Stuffing Report is to be sent to Maersk Line, following below example:

Appendix 1: ACT+ (Automated Cold Treatment Plus)

Explanation:
ACT+ is a new software similar to the known ACT.
ACT+ can be used on Starcool CIM6 units ONLY (+105,000 units per Jan 2018).

The single one, but very important difference between ACT and ACT+ :

The software will automatically adjust the supply air temperature with the aim to keep the warmest
USDA probe temperature around the Treatment Limit – 0.5 degC.

This is done to prevent chill damage to Cold Treatment Cargo in transit – when exposed to very low
temperatures during protocol application.
(please see the below sketch):

ACT : Supply air temperature maintained at constant level (Treatment Setpoint):

ACT+ : Supply air temperature not fixed at Treatment Setpoint – will aim to maintain the warmest USDA
at -0,5C below the treatment limit.
