Exercise 1: Garment specification sheet/ measurement chart

Exercise 2: Defect identification

Assignment 2: Quality Manual of Buyers

Dear Students,

The usual roles taken up by MFM students are of buyers, buying house merchandisers, profile with
brands etc. So, why it is important for you to know about quality? As a brand head, or category manager
or as a buyer or as a buying house merchandiser there may be the situations where it would be required
for you to take a call regarding acceptance or rejection of the merchandise. With that context, we are
doing these activities to understand the basic concepts of Quality and trying to learn from do it by
yourself.

In Exercise 1 you learnt about

 How to measure the garment.

 What are different point of measurements (POM)
 Understanding of different point of measurements (POM)
 Concept of tolerance
 How to measure the garment during the inspection of bulk production & taking a decision of
accepting or rejecting the garment based on tolerance limit provided. Also, it helps you under
the size aspect of the garment.

The other point which one has to take into consideration while inspecting the garment is Identification
of defect and presence of that defect in a particular zone of the garment. Based on the defect
type and presence of defect in particular zone of the garment commercial decision will be taken up for
accepting or rejecting the garment.

A similar concept we discussed during the 4 point inspection case study as well.

So to understand the second part of Inspection here is exercise/activity 2

Exercise/Activity 2:

1. Look at a wide variety of apparel items and document a minimum of 10 defects. May need to refer
a number of garments to document 10 defects. You will get a lot in your wardrobe 

2. For each defect found in activity 1, indicate at which stage it may have occurred (Fabric defect,
marker defect, cutting defect or sewing defect) and explain how the brand could have prevented the
garment defect from reaching the consumer.
How will you do this?

Refer Material shared with you in Session 12. Attaching defect zone ppt along with this mail. Session 12
material: Bloomsbury Fashion Central - Quality Assurance Along the Supply Chain mentions a good
content under the section TYPES OF DEFECTS .. also you may learnt about this content in your 1 st Sem
subject as well. Also, refer defect zone ppt and document your findings. For spreading, cutting defects
another pdf SCAP reference material can also be referred. Please find the attached file with this mail.

Defect pictures need to be attached in the template/ document.

Submission date through return mail as a reply of the mail sent by me: 3/04/2020, Friday.
