PRESSURE CONTROL VALVES
valves for the control of pressure in
protected escape routes to BS EN 12101-6:2005.

specifications
Modular range of wall mounted units with 1 - 9 blades

Screw fix front flanges

Body material - 16swg Carbon Steel, finished in white or light grey

Polyester powder coating

Blades and internal parts - Carbon Steel, Zinc Plated/Coated

Designed to last the life of the building without maintenance

Operating pressures from 25 Pa and up to 75 Pa

Accurately pre-set to pressure but site adjustable if required

Can be built up in multiple units using fixing channels

Rear loose sections available if required

selection procedure
To determine which Type SP valve(s) is required for your project it is
necessary to assess the building leakage and then determine the flow
required across open doors to enable a theoretical supply volume to be
established. The BS 5588 Standard suggests that 25% be added to this
to give an actual supply volume and that the valves be sized to handle
the supply volume less door and building leakage other than across the
open doors. The formula given for leakage calculation is

Operating &
Type SP Maintenance
Instructions
Please read these instructions before installing or attempting adjustment of this Aercon
valve which is a sensitive instrument that has been tested accurately and pre-set to
pressure prior to despatch to you.

• Scope: Models: 1SP ~ 9SP

• General description:
The Aercon® Type SP Air Pressure Control Valve comprises from one to nine finely balanced
carbon steel blade(s) pivoting on sealed for life ball bearings with centrally located balance weight
assemblies, to give operating pressures from 25Pa up to 75Pa with 5 Pascals of adjustment
either way.
The blade(s) is fully contained within the valve housing which is fabricated in carbon steel with
grey Polyester coating and is pre-drilled for screw fixing direct to the wall.
The valve assembly can be supplied with a mating slip -over rear flange section which is also pre-
drilled for screw fixing.

• Installation:
Important: DO NOT MOVE THE VALVE BY MEANS OF THE BLADE AS YOU MAY EASILY
DAMAGE IT.

It is recommended that the valve should only be installed when all building, decorating and
cleaning-up operations are complete.
The valve housing should be inserted in the stairwell, carefully levelled in both planes and then
fixed to the wall with No. 8 woodscrews. The rear flange (where required) should now be slipped
over the valve housing and similarly fixed to the wall. It is recommended that the gap between the
housing and the rear flange be sealed with silicon mastic.

• Operation:
Aercon Type SP valves are self actuating, sensing a pre-set pressure and require no external
power source. They are not volume dependant provided that the volume is at least 10 % of the
unit's rated maximum.
Ensure that the inlet and outlet of the valve are free from any obstructions.

• Routine Maintenance and Cleaning:

Aercon® Type SP Valves only require minimal maintenance, being designed and engineered for a
long trouble free life.

An annual inspection and test is recommended, covering the following points:-

1. Ensure that the blade moves freely within the housing by applying light finger pressure to the
bottom edge of the blade when viewed from the high pressure side. Any "stickiness" in the
movement of the blade should be investigated and rectified. (This may require the valve to be
returned to the Works for overhaul).
2. Examine the blade stops and renew if showing signs of deterioration.
3. The valve operating pressure should be checked using a calibrated manometer and if necessary
reset as described below.
4. The valve should be regularly cleaned using a vacuum cleaner to remove any dust or by wiping
down with a soft cloth moistened with dilute disinfectant solution.
Under no circumstances should the valve be immersed in any fluid nor should it be
autoclaved.

• Adjustment of pressure setting:

Do not exert undue force on the blade(s) assembly during adjustment or pressure setting.

1. Valves are supplied Works set to pressure with the M6 locknuts on the balance weights tightened
to ensure retention of the setting in transit and to prevent unauthorised alteration.
2. For each blade slacken the M6 locknut on the inlet side balance weight sufficiently using a 10mm.
A/F spanner to allow the balance weight to be rotated without undue force and with no end float.
3. Turn the balance weight on the high pressure side of the valve (denoted by the
INCREASE/DECREASE transfer) anticlockwise to increase the pressure setting or clockwise to
decrease the setting. The balance weight on the low pressure side of the valve must not be
adjusted.
4. The balance weight on the low pressure (outlet) side of the valve controls the sensitivity of the
valve and must remain locked.
5. Following adjustment the M6 locknut should be re-tightened sufficiently to prevent the balance
weight being rotated and the pressure re-checked to ensure that it has not been altered during the
tightening process.

• Problems?

Aercon valves and stabilisers are covered by a twelve month “return to factory” warranty against
faulty workmanship and materials.

In the event of any malfunction or difficulty in obtaining the required pressure setting of a valve or
stabiliser please contact the Aercon department of Power Utilities Limited for assistance.

An on-site commissioning / re-setting / repair service is available in the U.K. or alternatively

stabilisers may be returned carriage paid, to the Works for these services.
