Abstract :

Schiff bases form an important class of the most widely used organic compounds and have
gained importance in medicinal and pharmaceutical fields due to a broad spectrum of biological
activities like anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, anticonvulsant, antitubercular,
anticancer, antioxidant and so forth. The presence of fluorine in organic molecules often results in
unexpected biological activity, which is rationalized as being due to their higher lipophilicity
which enhances the rate of penetration and transport of the drug to an active site. Modern
fluorine-organic chemistry has dramatically widened the synthetic repertoire for the specific
introduction of fluorine into organic molecules.

The Schiff base ligand was obtained by condensation of salicylaldehyde (2-hydroxy-

benzaldehyde) and 2-fluoroaniline(1-amino-2-fluorobenzene) and characterized depending on
the results obtained from CHN , NMR, FTIR, LCMS and electronic spectra. The geometry of
the Schiff base was evaluated using molecular calculation with argus lab software. The molecule
is built and geometry optimization was done using molecular mechanics uniform force
field(UFF) method. The Schiff base ligand was tested for antimicrobial activity against Gram
positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis and Gram negative bacteria
Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, where the ligand showed good biological activity.
