1. Air flows in a variable air duct. At a certain section of the duct (1) the velocity,
pressure and temperature are 30 m/s, 120 kPa and 10ºC respectively. At another
section (2) the velocity is 250 m/s. Assuming incompressible flow, find the pressure
at section (2) and the area ratio A2/A1.

2. Solve problem 1 assuming adiabatic, frictionless compressible flow and compare the
results.

3. An insulated tank initially evacuated is supplied with air from a pipeline at 3 MPa and
300 K through a valve. The valve is closed when the pressure in the tank reaches 3
MPa. Find the equilibrium temperature of the tank.

4. A tank 0.1 m3 in volume contains O2 at 10 MPa and 20ºC. It starts to leak out through
a small orifice 1.0 mm in diameter to the atmosphere. The mass flow rate through the

orifice is given by = 0.0425 /√ (kg/s), where A is the area (m2) of the

o
orifice, p and T are the pressure (Pa) and temperature (K) in the tank respectively.
Assuming isothermal condition find the time required for the pressure to drop to 5
MPa.

5. Air enters a compressor at a rate of 0.25 kg/s with a pressure of 100 kPa and a
temperature of 20ºC. Compressed air leaves the compressor at 800 kPa and 50ºC.
Inlet and exit pipe diameters are 4.0 cm. If the rate of heat loss from the compressor is
180 kJ/min find the input power required to operate the compressor.

6. Two air streams mix in a duct as shown below. One stream enters the duct with a
velocity of 600 m/s, a pressure of 200 kPa and a temperature of 400ºC. The second
stream enters at 30 m/s, 200 kPa and 100ºC. If A2/A1 = 5, find the velocity, pressure
and temperature of the air leaving the duct. Assume adiabatic compressible flow.

V3, p3, T3, A3
V2, p2, T2, A2

7. Air flows in a variable area duct at a rate of 23.23 kg/s. At certain section the
pressure, temperature and velocity are 200 kPa, 300 K and 100 m/s respectively. At
another section the area is 0.06 m2. Find the pressure, temperature and velocity at this
section. Assume adiabatic frictionless compressible flow.
