TEN BEST HORSES WHO LOST OUT ON

BRIGHT START FOR There=s some hope for the camp of Accelerate (Lookin At
Lucky), but not much. The more you talk to voters and racing
CAIRO PRINCE fans and experts, the more it becomes clear that Justify (Scat
Daddy) will be named the 2018 Horse of the Year. It=s the power
of the Triple Crown, and it=s such a big force it appears that even
a GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner and a five-time Grade I winner
on the year can=t even put a dent into it.
A little history: The modern day Eclipse Awards were created
in 1971. Wikipedia has compiled a list of Horses of the Year
going all the way back to 1887. Until the award was unified by
the Daily Racing Form, The National Turf Writers Association,
and the Thoroughbred Racing Associations (which has been
replaced by the NTRA), several groups, including Turf and
Sport Digest Magazine named their own champion. That
sometimes led to there being more than one Horse of the

Alydar, Danzig and Fappiano. But they all took the title more
than 30 years ago, when the world of Thoroughbred breeding
was a simpler place. Superstardom has arguably awaited fewer
of their successors, but there are still some notable names
among the freshman title-holders, such as Distorted Humor,
Tiznow, Street Cry, Tapit, Scat Daddy, Quality Road and Uncle
Mo.
The corollary to this is that many a good stallion HASN'T
landed the title, or even come close to doing so. For example,
Curlin ranked no higher than ninth in 2012, whereas
Ghostzapper was 21st, Indian Charlie 10th, More Than Ready
sixth, Pulpit seventh and Kitten=s Joy fifth in their respective
years. And don=t forget that some years are much more
competitive than others, the prime example being the class of
2008, when the top five featured Tapit, Candy Ride, Medaglia
d'Oro and Speightstown.

The reaction to Cairo Prince=s sales success was to increase his

fee for a second time, from the $15,000 he had cost in his
second and third seasons to $25,000 in 2018, when--as usual--
he covered around 148 mares. Although Cairo Prince=s second
crop couldn=t match his first-crop=s sales figures, his 2018
yearlings still sold well for a comparatively inexpensive stallion,
with colts achieving $450,000, $350,000, $340,000 and
$300,000. He is therefore well placed for a bright 2019.
Fortunately for his admirers, Cairo Prince has made a bright
enough start to maintain his fee at $25,000 in 2019. In finishing
third, he went close to matching his sire Pioneerof the Nile,
runner-up to Dunkirk among the freshmen of 2013, and he fared
better than his grandsire Empire Maker, who was seventh in
2007. Bodemeister, another of Empire Maker's sons, was third
behind Dialed In and Union Rags in 2016, before coming up with
the 2017 GI Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming.
The star of Cairo Prince's first crop has been Cairo Cat, who has
won two of his three starts, including the GIII Iroquois S. at
Churchill Downs. Cairo Prince=s daughter Pakhet has also proved
well above average, contesting the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile
Fillies Turf after her maiden victory at Belmont and her second
in the GII Jessamine S.

Glen Hill Farm=s Caribou Club, who ended 2018 with a graded
stakes win, opened the New Year in the same fashion, winning
the GIII Joe Hernandez S. down the hill at Santa Anita Tuesday.
Sent off at 3-1 as he looked to reverse his narrow defeat to
stablemates Stormy Liberal and Conquest Tsunami in the GIII
Eddie D. S. last September, Caribou Club dropped back to last as
Conquest Tsunami zipped through an opening quarter in :20.92.
Conquest Tsunami was still front after a half in :42.10 with
favored Stormy Liberal looking ready to roll in upper stretch,
while Caribou Club was looking for racing room. The two-time GI
Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint winner=s rally stalled and, as the
pacesetter drifted out, Caribou Club streaked inside of those
two rivals to grab the lead close to home. Stormy Liberal ground
out the last few strides to just best Conquest Tsunami.
AI had a big smile on my face when Conquest Tsunami moved
himself out turning for home, opening the rail for me,@ admitted
winning rider Joe Talamo. AHe=s such a cool horse. I think six
and-a-half to a mile, or a mile and a sixteenth...I think he can
really do anything because of his style. They went quick early
today, so he was further back, but when they go two turns, he
can lay up a little closer.@

title at Turfway Park and took sole possession of the record for
most titles at the Florence, Kentucky track. Maker had been tied
with Bernie Flint, who last earned a Turfway Park title for the
2004 holiday meet. Maker and Ward ended Turfway=s holiday
meet Monday with 10 wins apiece.
Ken and Sarah Ramsey earned a record 15th owner=s title at
Turfway with nine winners from 20 starters. Leading jockey
honors went to Rodney Prescott with 21 wins.

asking a lot for them all to fulfil their potential if they are
standing alongside (and essentially in competition with) each
other. That is the position which Prince Khalid Abdullah has
found himself in with Kind (Ire) (Danehill), dam of two winners
of the G1 Champion S., i.e. the peerless Frankel (GB) (Galileo
{Ire}) and his full-brother Noble Mission (GB).
Few have played their cards better in such a situation than the

Stephen Ralph was a member of a club with the smallest of
numbers at Ellerslie on New Year=s Day with his belief in sprinter
Santa Monica (NZ) (Per Incanto) shared by just a select few. The
Te Aroha trainer had unwavering confidence that his mare could
roll the fancied runners in the G1 Sistema Railway S. and for
anyone that cared to listen to him--and there weren=t many
takers--they were well-rewarded.
Santa Monica got the job done at odds of 76-1 and in the
process dented a host of short-course reputations.
AShe=s been knocking on the door and I knew she could win
this,@ Ralph said. AThe only horse I feared was Melody Belle.@
Ridden by her regular partner Trudy Thornton, Santa Monica
raced in the body of the field and then cut loose down the
outside to burn punters= fingers badly.
AThat was great work by Trudy. She knows the horse so well
and she summed up everything perfectly,@ Ralph said. AWe
haven=t been able to buy a trick with this horse, she=s been
unlucky.@
Second Group 1 winner for Per Incanto
Santa Monica is the second Group 1 winner for her sire Per
Incanto (USA) (Street Cry {Ire}), who has 41 catalogued in the
upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale, including 18 in
the Premier session. She also becomes the fourth stakes winner
this season for the Little Avondale stallion who currently
occupies third position on the New Zealand General Sires'
Premiership.
Santa Monica has now won five of her 28 starts for owners
Stuart and Cherie Hope, who joined forces with Ralph more than
a decade ago.
AWe formed a partnership which has been 13 years in the
making so it hasn=t happened overnight,@ Ralph said.
From a strong racing background, Ralph's father John, a former
Group 1-winning trainer, was on course to witness the victory.
ADad wasn=t going to come and then he turned up at the last
minute,@ Ralph said. AIt=s my first Group 1 winner and she=s got
that ability so she=s only doing what she should be doing.@
Ralph=s day was completed by Santa Monica=s stablemate
Marissa (NZ) (Fully Fledged {NZ}), who came out in the next race
and knocked off her Rating 72 rivals in the Barfoot & Thompson
H.
Hot Pace Suited
For jockey Thornton, it was her second consecutive carnival
strike at the highest level after she partnered Authentic Paddy
(NZ) (Howbaddouwantit {USA}) to win the G1 Zabeel Classic 12
months ago. The 55-year-old is still going strong and enjoying
her job more than 1,000 winners down the line.
AI=m just so pleased for the horse and the owners and for
Stephen,@ Thornton said. AThe mare is a tough competitor and
she always tries her heart out.@
The pace of the race, set up by Gift Of Power (NZ) (Power
{GB}), had been the key to Santa Monica=s boil-over victory.
AThe speed was on, which really suited her,@ Thornton said.
AShe likes it really firm as well and she=s so much happier on
good ground.@
Best of the Rest
Santa Monica had a neck to spare at the post on the Cameron
Lammas-ridden Princess Kereru (NZ) (Pins), whose co-trainer
Ken Kelso was delighted with his 5-year-old=s performance.
AIt was a huge effort and a great ride by Cameron [Lammas],@
said the Matamata conditioner, who operates in partnership
with his wife Bev and Mark Donoghue. AI thought we were home
for a while. She just got in the worst part of the track, but I=m
not making any excuses. It=s terrific to get a Group 1 placing and
a great result for the stable and for all the staff who do all the
